Re: Lord Nrsimhadeva - destroyer of material desires

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krsna!

"We offer repects to Lord Nrsimhadeva as one of the many candle light coming off the origin Lord Krsna" posted by lowerthatarats

Yes Prabhu that may be true from a point of vision. And our attraction to Krsna is as the sweetheart of Vrindavan, the madhurya rasa.

But from another angle of vision Krsna is Vasudeva. So the practical devotee seeking love of Krsna will try and see all things in relation to Krsna. Desiring to not forget him, for one second. Even the mundane becomes a spiritual tool for rememberance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If the sadhaka can nurture such a state of consciousness, love of God is sure, due to his rememberance. Perfect samadhi.

So we can say 'Oh how beautiful is Krsna the cowherd boy, he even appears with lion's teeth and blood soaked nails, to satisfy his devotees internal moods. I worship that Lord Krsna, that summum bonum, whose glories are sung in Srimad Bhagavatam'.

Re: Lord Shiva the greatest Vaishnav

>. I was thinking that since Lord Shiva is the greatest Vaishnav and He accepts people who are in the mode of ignorance and He has the power to tranform us from ignorance to goodness, then can we worship Lord Krishna only after Lord Shiva makes us qualified to do so ?

Welcome to the NITAAI.com Forums Rahul. We very much appreciate your questions. Thanks to Igor for the nice answers.

>Lord Shiva is pleased easily and in the Rig Veda it is stated that a person who chants Om Namah Shivaya becomes free from sins. >Thus can we first worship Lord Shiva so that after becoming free from sins we can become qualified to worship Lord Krishna ?

The Holy Name of Lord Shiva is very auspicious. Shiva means auspicious in Sanskrit. In one way, Lord Shiva is non-different from Lord Gauraanga Krishna, being His gunaavatara. Still there is a difference between Shiva Tattva and Vishnu Tattvabheda-abheda. Lord Shiva can possess a maximum of only 55 divine qualities to a large extent. Lord Vishnu posseses 60 divine qualities to a full extent. And Lord Krishna possesses 64 divine qualities to an unlimited extent. And we souls can possess only 48 divine qualities to a small extent even in our perfected stage.

"Om Namaha Shivaaya" certainly destroys our sins but to fully uproot the propensity to sin itself, one needs to please Lord Shiva more by chanting the Holy Names of His Lord and Master Shri Gauraanga Krishna. And those who chant "Om Namaha Shivaaya" considering Lord Shiva as the Supreme, do not receive the full benefits of chanting it. Because Lord Shiva is highly displeased even with his own followers if they don't accept the supreme position of his own Lord and Master Lord Gauraanga Krishna and instead start worshiping him as Lord and Master

To those sincere devotees who approach Lord Shiva with the right desire, Lord Shiva himself quickly directs them to associate with the devotees of his Master Lord Gaura Krishna and chant His Holy Names because he himself is contantly chanting the Holy Names of Lord Gaura Krishna.

It is the instruction of Lord Shiva himself that someone who knows or directly comes in contact with Shiva's own Lord Gaura Krishna and His devotees, should directly approach his own Lord with his full blessings and not look back. He becomes the most pleased with such a devotee. He wants to see whole world directly worship his Lord Gaura Krishna.

Shrimad Bhaagavata  2.3.10:
akamah sarva-kamo va, moksha-kama udara-dhih
tivrena bhakti-yogena, yajeta purusham param

"A person who has broader intelligence, whether he be full of all material desire, without any material desire, or desiring liberation, must by all means worship the supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead."

Specifically for those who are in the lowest modes of ignorance like ghosts, spirits, goblins etc. who have no chance of even trying to understand Lord Gaura Krishna directly due to their extremely tamasic nature, Lord Shiva becomes their patient guide and tries to gradually uplift them to a stage where they can approach Lord Gaura Krishna. They receive spiritual credits by serving him and they get very gradually elevated.

So if one prefers this slow process over the fast and direct one of directly approaching Lord Gaura Krishna, then one can chant only Om Namah Shivaya and wait for one's gradual advancement. But if one is inteliigent and wants to please Lord Shiva even more, such a soul will directly take up the process of Nityaananda Gauraanga Hare Krishna Naama Bhakti Yoga, knowing that this is eternal occupation of even Lord Shiva himself.

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Re: Lord Gauranga - being a Devotee or posing as devotee

> Does it mean there are sannyassis in Vraja? And what does it mean "now and then"?

It happened when Shrimati Radha went into Maana. Please read this this nice pastime as told by His Holiness Gour Govinda Swami.

>What about this point in regard to the eternity in the spiritual world of Goloka Vrindavana? Doesn't Lord Gauranga want to relish this >particular opulence (renunciation) eternally, as it makes Him complete as per the above statement?

He can exhibit it in many other different ways since He is the Lord Himself. His creation itself displays His renunciation. The whole creation is within Him and He is everywhere in this creation but still He remains aloof and does not become attached to it. Of course the eternal abode of Shri Jagannatha Puri Dhaama and Lord Gaura's simultaneous Pastimes as a Sannyasi are also part of Goloka. Puri Dhaama's glories in Goloka are described in the Hari Vamsha. But His Grihastha Pastimes in the eternal Shri Navadvipa Dhaama in Goloka are more well-known to us here in this material world. And in the eternal Navadvipa, He does not become a sannyasi.

Why Krishna Became Gauranga Mahaprabhu

Why Krsna Became Gauranga Mahaprabhu
by Shrila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja

Two Kinds of Maya

Two mayas are there. One is Maha-maya, that is to say, the illusionary energy, and the other is Yoga-maya. Yoga means that which gives you an opportunity to go to Krsna. That is Yoga-maya. That which prevents, that is viyoga-maya or Maha-maya. Yoga means union. Viyoga means separation. So there are two mayas.

Viyoga-maya or Maha-maya is working in the material world. Her activities are so wonderful. Srila Prabhupada has said: the froggish philosophers, mundane wranglers, what can they understand--what to speak of Yoga-maya, the internal energy of the Lord, her activities are so amazing and wonderful. Even sometimes it becomes very difficult on the part of Krsna to understand them! What to speak of us, even Krsna becomes amazed! So I shall speak that thing.

Radharani is hladini sakti. She is Madana-mohana-Mohini, who attracts the senses of Madana-Mohan, Krsna. Krsna always thinks of Radharani. He gets so much pleasure when He unites with Radha, which He cannot get elsewhere. Radharani is leftist, 'vamangi'. Her mood is leftist mood. Candravali is the opposing party, 'daksinangi', rightist. Krsna does not get so much pleasure when He unites with Candravali; at that time He also thinks of Radha. Thus sometimes Krsna goes to Candravali's camp in order to raise the leftist mood of Radharani to the highest point; only for that purpose, nothing else.

GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT

One day Srimate Radharani decorated Her kunja very nicely. Her asta-sakhis, eight intimate sakhis are there. Lalita, Visakha, Tunga-vidya, etc., they decorated Radharani's kunja with varieties of scented flowers, so many decorations. Krsna will come. They are all waiting. Radharani is waiting, waiting eagerly for Krsna to come. Some wind is blowing, some sound is produced. "Oh, Krsna's coming!" So she is in anxiety at every moment. But Krsna has not come.

They sent one dyuti, messenger, "You go and see where is this Krsna!" So the dyuti went out and on the way met Saibya, Candravali's companion sakhi. Saibya told her that Krsna is in Candravali's kunja. So that dyuti came back and reported it to Lalita and Visakha. "Krsna is in Candravali's kunja." So Visakha became very angry. Lalita is a bit softer. Visakha is very hard. They reported this to Radharani. Radharani became sulky. Her leftist mood became heightened and reached the topmost point.

What does Srimate Radharani say? "Why should Krsna come to Me? I am most ill-fated! So many gopis are there. Candravali and so many others are there." That is leftist mood. So Radharani says, "I don't want Krsna to come. Don't allow Him to come to My kunja. Entrance is forbidden!" Radha said this out of sulkiness.

HARSH WORDS

Meanwhile, Krsna came, but at the gate Visakha and Lalita stopped Him. "Not allowed!" "Get out from here, unreliable person! Our prana-sakhi, our dearmost sakhi has decorated this kunja so nicely, waiting for You. Where were You?! Why are You coming now? Get out from here!" Visakha was very hard.

Krsna is now in a very humble mood. He said, "I am a great offender. Please allow me to go and beg excuse at the lotus feet of your prana-sakhi." "NO! NO! Get out from here! Now allowed. Admission forbidden."

Krsna became disappointed. He could not understand what to do. He went to the banks of the Yamuna. He gave up His garments and rolled on the sand, morose, disappointed, crying.

ONLY ONE HOPE

Then Paurnamasi devi, Yoga-maya, came. She knows everything and arranges all the activities there, the lilas there. All the activities of Purnamasi, Yoga-maya, are so wonderful that sometimes even Krsna cannot understand.

So Purnamasi devi said, "Oh my dear boy, why are You in such a condition? I know everything. All right! All right! I have made an arrangement. I have already sent Vrnda-devi to make arrangements for your union with Radharani."

Then Vrnda came. Krsna was very morose, crying, sitting there, rolling in the sand of the Yamuna. Vrnda devi thought, "Oh! I am an instrument in the hand of Purnamasi, Yoga-maya. Krsna is lila-maya, what a very wonderful lila He has manifested. So now Krsna is feeling so much acute pangs of separation from Radharani, and Radharani has developed a sulkiness that Krsna doesn't know how to break. So Paurnamasi is using me as instrument. If I can be an instrument in uniting Radha and Krsna, then I think my life will be successful."

She thought to herself like that, and then approaching Krsna, she said, "I am Vrnda. I have come here under the direction of Paurnamasi. I understand that there is no means how you will be able to meet Radharani and console Her, to break Her sulkiness. No other means is there, but one thing is there. If you do what I say, then there is hope."

Krsna says, "All right. I must do whatever you say. I cannot understand what to do. I am bewildered, I can't think of what to do."

Vrnda said, "All right. You should give up this gopa-vesa (dress of a cowherd boy). You have to give up this thing. Such nice curling hair on Your head--but you have to shave your head. Yes. And give up the flute. Give up your peacock feather. And don't be in these three places bent, tri-bhanga. Give up all these things and this blackish body. No! These are all things You have to give up. You have to shave Your head and You have have to become a sannyasi and give up all these things. I will teach You one song. You have to sing that song. And take one khanjani, a musical instrument. You have to play and sing that song in that sannyasi form, then there is hope."

When Vrnda said this, immediately that form appeared there. Krsna became that sannyasi form--shaved head, and His complexion is of molten gold. No peacock feather, no flute, no three places curved form. In yogi, sannyasi form He immediately appeared there. Then Vrnda devi sang a song, that is glorification of Radha,

    srimate radhe bada abhimani
    bamya bhave siromani-syama sari ange
    achadana tava tapta-kancana varana
    eto dina chile pagalani raye
    kanu preme prana sampi
    sarve rupe guneogo gandharvike
kanu mana kari curi aji radha prema
bhika mage kanu phere dware dware hai

"Oh Srimate Radharani, You have developed a sulky mood. You are the crest jewel of the leftisty mood. Your whole body is covered with a bluish sari. The complexion of Your body is that of molten gold. Up to now Radharani was mad for Kanu (Krsna) prema. She was stealing the mind of Krsna. O Gandarvike, You were stealing the mind of Kanu, Krsna, enchanting Him with Your beautiful form and qualities. But today Kanu, Krsna, is moving from door to door begging radha-prema, radha-prema, radha-prema"

SANNYASI THAKURA
So Krsna sang that song. Then He went to Radharani's kunja. At the gate He found Lalita and Visakha. Krsna started singing this nice song glorifying Radharani. Singing, "Kanu is a beggar today, moving door to door begging radha-prema, radha-prema, radha-prema."

Seeing a sannyasi singing this nice song, Lalita and Visakha became very happy.

Visakha said, "Sannyasi thakura, this song You are singing is very nice. Who has taught You this song?"

Krsna replied, "My Guru is Gandharvika (Radharani)."

"Oh, Your Guru is Gandharvika?"

"Oh yes, My Guru has taught me this very nice song."

"Why have you come here, what do You want?"

The sannyasi said, "I have nothing, I am a beggar. I've come here to get radha-prema, radha-prema. I am a prema-bhikhari. I am a beggar of prema."

"All right, O sannyasi thakura, my prana-sakhi is very, very distressed. She is always crying, in a dying condition. Her fate is very, very bad, ill-fated. Do You know the calculation of fate, sannyasi? Can You calculate seeing the lines on the hand of my sakhi?"

"Oh yes, I know it."

"You know? Who has taught You?"

"Oh my Guru has taught Me all these things--Gandharvika."

"Will You come into the kunja to calculate the fate of our prana-sakhi? She's very much distressed."

"Oh yes, I can do."

Krsna wants that thing (that meeting), so He said, "Yes, I can come."

So in the meantime, Lalita has gone to Radharani and said that a sannyasi thakura has come. "He is singing a very nice song. He knows how to calculate Your fate."

Then Visakha takes the sannyasi into the kunja. She requested Krsna, "Will You please again sing that nice song You were singing before?"

Then Krsna sang that song in glorification of Radha. "Today Kanu is a bhikari, He is a beggar, moving from door to door begging radha-prema." When Radharani heard that last line, She said,

    aslisya va pada-ratam pinastu mam
    adarsanan marma-hatam karotu va
    yatha tatha va vidadhatu lampato
    mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah

Radharani said the last verse of Siksastskam. "That debauchee, lampatah, whatever He likes He may do. He may do. He may embrace Me or kick Me, or crush Me with His feet or put Me in this condition of acute pangs of separation. Such painful condition, not giving Me darsana. Whatever He likes He may do, that debauchee. But He is the Lord of My heart, no one else."

Then Lalita said, "Have patience, O sakhi. One sannyasi thakura has come who will calculate Your fortune. Don't be impatient."

So Lalita let the sannyasi into the kunja and arranged a seat on the veranda of Radharani's bedroom. Then Lalita brought Radharani onto the veranda. So Radharani came, putting a veil on her head. Why? Because Radharani only sees Krsna. She never sees any other male. Putting on the veil, Radharani came and sat near the sannyasi thakura. Lalita brought Her left hand to the sannyasi thakura.

"Please calculate the fortune of our prana-sakhi."

Krsna said, "I am a sannyasi, I cannot touch the hand of your sakhi."

"How can You calculate then?"

"No, I can calculate seeing the lines on Her forehead. I know how to do it."

"But my sakhi does not look at any male, only Krsna. No. She's very strict in that matter. She never looks at any male but Krsna."

"Are-baba! I am a dandi-sannyasi. There's no harm. I have no desires. I've given up everything. I am a sannyasi. I am only a beggar. Begging love, I am prema-bhikari. I have given up everything. I have no desires. If your sakhi lifts the veil, there is no harm at all. Then I can calculate. I am a sannyasi, I am not an ordinary male."

Lalita devi removed the veil. Then immediately Krsna's form came, tri-bhanga-lalita. That sannyasi form disappeared. Now tri-bhanga, three places curved, peacock feather and flute. Then the eyes of Krsna and the eyes of Radha united. Her sulkiness was gone.

Then Visakha said, "So amazing, what is this?

    pahile dekhilun tomara sannyasi-svarrupa ebe
    toma dekhi muni syama-gopa-rupa
    tomara sammukhe dekhi kancana-pancalika
tanra gaura-kantye tomara sarva anga Dhaka
    tahate prakata dekhon sa-vamsi vadana
    nana bhave cancala tahe kamala-nayana

"At first I saw You appear like a sannyasi but now I am seeing You as Syamasundara, the cowherd boy. I saw You appearing like a golden doll, and Your entire body appeared covered by golden luster. I now see You holding a flute to Your mouth, and Your lotus eyes are moving very restlessly due to various ecstasies."
(Sri Caitanya.caritamrta, Madhya 8.268-270)

KRSNA-LILA, GAURA-LILA
That is what Ramananda Raya saw. Ramananda Raya is Visakha sakhi in Mahaprabhu's lila. Mahaprabhu showed that form to Ramananda. So amazing! So this is how Krsna has to cry and has to become a sannyasi begging for radha-prema. Radharani was crying and Visakha stated, "One day You'll have to cry like that!" And so He's crying in the form of Mahaprabhu.

    sri-radhayah pranaya-mahima kidrso vanayaiva
    svadyo yenabhuta-madhurima kidrso va madiyah
saukhyam casya mad-anubhavatah kidrsam veti lobhat
    tad-bhavadhyah samajani sai-garbha-sinadau harinduh
    (Sri Caitanya caritamrta, Adi 1.6)

What is Radharani's love? Now Krsna is a beggar of that. Radha-prema-bhikari. He came in a sannyasi form, as a beggar, begging radha-prema. In a completely different form--no three places curved, no curling hair--shaved head. Now His yellow garment is saffron colour and He's begging for radha-prema. That is radha-bhava. He came in this sannyasi form, otherwise He cannot pay back the debt. Krsna has become indebted. In this way, Krsna paid back the debt. So Radharani's sulkiness vanished. That is why Krsna became sannyasi, He became Mahaprabhu.

He (Krsna) came to understand these three things: "What is Radharani's love? What is My beauty that Radharani relishes? What happiness and pleasure does Radharani get relishing My beauty, how can I know?" In order to fulfill these three types of greed and desires Krsna appeared as Mahaprabhu, from the womb of Sacimata, sai garbha-sindau harinduh. In order to understand these three things is why He became a sannyasi. This is so wonderful--Krsna became amazed. This is the activity of Yoga-maya, Paurnamasi. Oh, so wonderful that even Krsna cannot understand, then how can others understand?

In the modern age it may not be important for the sannyasi or Guru to travel. With the internet
and other modern technology the sannyasi can satisfy every one. Especially his disciples.
Who can have darshan every day.
The modern sannyasi can also give shiksa to other unfortunat souls. ( as it is)

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Thank You very much.

"And to relish the point (2), Lord Krishna does accept the vesha of a Sannyaasi now and then in Vraja also to beg for the love of Shrimati Radha."

Does it mean there are sannyassis in Vraja? And what does it mean "now and then"?

"(4) Lord Gaura wanted to personally exhibit His sixth divine quality (opulence) of vairagya or renunciation which He had not so explicity displayed in His previous pastimes of Lord Krishna (svayam avataari).  This sixth opulence makes Bhagavaana perfect and complete. He is the proprietor of everything but still He remains detached from it."

What about this point in regard to the eternity in the spiritual world of Goloka Vrindavana? Doesn't Lord Gauranga want to relish this particular opulence (renunciation) eternally, as it makes Him complete as per the above statement?

"The Navadvipa Pastimes of Lords Gauraanga are also very conducive to relish Raadhaa Bhaava because the majority of all His Associates are present in Navadvipa Dhaama. And there cannot be any pastimes without His Associates."

Re: Lord Gauranga - being a Devotee or posing as devotee

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! The answer is simple. If you read my (1), (3) and (4) points carefully, you will note that those are specifically for the circumstances in the material world. In the spiritual world, those are not required. That is why Lord Gaura enjoys as a Grihastha in the eternal Navadvipa Dhaama in Goloka and does not accept Sannyaasa and leave His home there. As Shrila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura states that sometimes the pastimes of the Lord in this material turn out to be even more merciful than His pastimes in Goloka since He desires to deliver the fallen conditioned souls.

And to relish the point (2), Lord Krishna does accept the vesha of a Sannyaasi now and then in Vraja also to beg for the love of Shrimati Radha.

The Navadvipa Pastimes of Lords Gauraanga are also very conducive to relish Raadhaa Bhaava because the majority of all His Associates are present in Navadvipa Dhaama. And there cannot be any pastimes without His Associates.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

It means that when you give a physical lecture how much can say. Only a very tiny very tiny fracton of what is there in our Acharyas' books can be explained in a lecture. But on NITAAI.com, one can access the unlimited nectar of the teachings of the Acharyas, search them, check if one's questions are already answered, one can even hear video lectures of the Acharyas' teachings etc. And those also not once in a week or month (like lecture programs) but one can access them daily on the site...at the fingertips.

Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada said that the direct assocition with the pure Mahabhagavata Associates of Lords Nityaananda Gauraanga by reading or hearing Shri Chaitanya Bhagavata, Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita, Shri Navadvipa Dhaama Mahaatmya, Shri Chaitanya Mangala, Shri Bhakti Ratnakara etc. is the highest association in this material world. And all these are available on our site. Of course still much more remains to be done to make this more available in multimedia form. smile

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Lord Shiva the greatest Vaishnav

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
Thank you so much for this questions dear Bhakta Rahul. I will try to give short answer, according to what I learned from my Gurudeva, His Holiness Bhakti-ratna Sadhu Swami Gaurangapada.

There is no harm to worship Mahadeva, Shiva as vaishnava-yatha-sambhu - greatest of all vaisnavas. We are offering obeisances to all our Gurus, our Guru Varga, vande gurun isa bhaktan...Gurun means gurus, plural. He is gatekeeper of Vraja and Our worshipable Acharya! If you pray to Lord Shiva to help you to chant Harinaam and serve Lord Krsna, there is no harm in that. Vaisnava yatha sambhu...we are offering our obeisances to every vaisnava, what to say to greatest of all vaisnavas - Mahadeva,  Shiva!

Basically, your question was how to become free from sins in order to approach Lord Krsna? What is best way to become free from sins in this age?

Our spiritual master, Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is teaching us:

kali jivera aparadha asankhya durvara
gauranga-nam vina tara nahika uddhara.
Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya Chp 1

"The offenses and sins of the living entities in Kali-yuga are unlimited and absolutely insurmountable. That is why the souls can never never be delivered without the regular chanting the most merciful name of 'Gauranga'."

Also you can read in Chaitanya-Bhagavata, Madhya-Khanda 3.134

"Simply by chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, the sinful inclinations in the hearts of all the living entities in the universe are permanently destroyed and their inherent purity is automatically awakened. On chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, even the merchants, degraded, fallen and foolish people are purified and immediately become realized in the Absolute Truth and devotees of the Lord."

So, conclusion is simple, there is no harm in worshiping Lord Shiva and praying to Him to help us to advance in Naam Yoga. At the same time chanting of om nama shivaya mantra is not prerequisite to approach Lord Gauranga Krsna, because His Own Holy Names instantly destroys unlimited numbers of sins. So chanting of Nitaai and Gauraa Naam together with Hare Krsna Maha Mantra is most powerful and highest practice.

Please feel free to ask any relevant questions. If we are helping each other to advance in understanding and practice of devotional service then all creation is becoming favorable because topics about Lord Krsna and His Names, Pastimes , Associates etc are our eternal wealth.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna

I would like to add if we have full faith in the words of Lord Krsna: Bhagavad Gita 18. 66
then there would be no need to take shelter else where. Lord krsna said he would take care of us. liberate us from all sins..

We ofer repects to Lord Nrsimhadeva as one of the many candle light coming off the origin Lord Krsna

Re: Nityananda Triyodoshi Bhajan In Scotland Video

> the khol and kartal was given by Mahaprabhu from the spiritual world.

I agree. I will compile an article on how the sound of the mridanga and karatals has various spiritual meanings.

       >When the masses hear karmi style kirttan or sankirttan then they will expect it alway as the norm.

In one way, I agree. When other modern or other musical instruments start getting used very commonly, always and regularly in Sankirtana, the essential nature of the mridanga and karatals is in one way reduced. In some cases, I have seen that mridangas are karatals get slowly replaced by other musical instruments and the newer generation of devotees may think that it is the norm. It is not very difficult to procure mridangas and karatals as they are not so costly. They are Gaura vastu or directly Gaura's paraphernalia. Sankirtana with these two is known as Gaura Vihita Kirtana. They strongly remind us about Lords Nitaai Gaura's Sankirtana. Anything which reminds us of the Lord should always be at our side.

Of course, the modern instruments can be used for Kirtana meant specifically for those audiences and gatherings who gather to hear them. This is certainly a way to attract them to the Holy Names. And giving people the Holy Names is the highest of all services. But when we introduce these new age modern instruments in our Temples or Ashrams where mature devotees gather for Sankirtana, then we are not teaching the assembled devotees the ideal standard of mridangas and karatals and introducing a new standard which may gradually end up replacing the traditional mrindagas and karatalas althogether.

Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya 11.216

ashta mridanga baaje, batrisa karataala
hari-dhvani kare sabe, bale -- bhaala, bhaala

'In the four groups (during the Puri Ratha Yatra Sankirtana of Lord Gaura) there were eight mridangas and thirty-two karatalas (cymbals). All together they began to vibrate the transcendental sound, and everyone said, "Very good! Very good!"'

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

the khol and kartal was given by Mahaprabhu from the spiritual world.
So surly it will be most effective in the iron age.

yes ofourse Mr harrison was blessed by my guru Srila Swami Maharaj to make music to attract the masses. but Srila Gurudev did not tell his devotees to use other instrument in sankirttan.

When the masses hear karmi style kirttan or sankirttan then they will expect it alway as the norm.

But when you hear the khol and kartal its so much sweeter.

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Of course as I stated, if devotees do use the modern musical instruments in the service of the Lord to specifically attract those souls who would not be attracted otherwise to our traditional Kirtana standards, who are we to judge the nice services of those devotees. Shrila Swami Prabhupada most mercifully engaged the Beatle George Harrison to sing about the Lord in western music and George made so many souls to sing and dance to the tune of Hare Krishna. So ultimately the end may justify the means. On the same hand as a Guru, I do need to do my duty and mention the ideal standard of Lord Gaura and the Acharyas even if it sounds unpalatable. This article in not in relation to the original video posted in this topic but a general article on use of musical instruments in Sankirtana.

Re: Lord Shiva the greatest Vaishnav

Nityananda!! Gauranga!! Hare Krishna!!

Dear Prabhu,

Thank you so much for guiding so nicely.

However I have some more queries and would like to request you to guide me with the same. In chapter 7 of the gita Krishna has said that people who are free from sins worship Him with determination. Thus determination comes only when we are free from sins. In Srimad Bhagavatam there is a warning that since Lord Krishna is the supreme personality of Godhead He is not pleased very easily. Lord Shiva is pleased easily and in the Rig Veda it is stated that a person who chants Om Namah Shivaya becomes free from sins. Thus can we first worship Lord Shiva so that after becoming free from sins we can become qualified to worship Lord Krishna ?

Nityananda!! Gauranaga!! Hare Krishna!!

Internet Writing vs Travelling

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! Pranams!

"Some may think that why does Swami Gaurangapada concentrate so much to writing about the Lord and replying to question on the Forums (Internet). Would'nt it be better if he travels more widely in this world and personally meets and preaches to others?"

My reply is:

It is a fact that Vaani (spiritual instruction as written or spoken word) is more important than Vapuh (physical association). The written or spoken word about the Lord remains in this world for a longer period of time and can now be propagated widely much more easily and quickly via the Internet for the benefit of many more souls. This is a more substantial and tangible service for me and it satisfies my soul more. Of course, different devotional preachers have different moods and all their services are most glorious and greatly wonderful, but this my mood.

When we travel and meet people, they are impressed for a short time but then later many of them may forget or become slow or negligent of their spiritual practices. Of course sincere souls are certainly benefitted in this way and it is one of the most wonderful service. The duty of a sannyaasi is not to keep on coaxing people not to forget their daily Bhajana, but to give the instructions and message with full purity and leave the rest to those souls to implement. I personally feel internet is a more powerful medium to do that. Of course, internet cannot replace the need of personal association in most cases since people are not very advanced level and thus need personal guidance, but our NITAAI.com internet association is also a more advanced higher kind of direct association with the topmost Vaani of Gurudeva and the Acharyas.

I agree that everyone would not be able to directly become attracted by Internet Vaani without personal meeting but I see my service as more focused on spreading the pure Vaani of our Acharyas via the internet and make it potentially available to all the souls in this world as internet is available to everyone. This is my humble service and I am not even a particle of dust at the lotus feet of those glorious devotees who travel widely to purely preach and teach others the Holy Names by accepting so much physical inconvenience.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Re: Nityananda Triyodoshi Bhajan In Scotland Video

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Trraditionally Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada also did not allow harmonium to be played with singing kirtana or even bhajana in the Gaudiya Math temples as harmonium was considered a musical instrument which was introduced later and not was present in the original Sankirtana of Lords Nitaai Gaura, five hundred years ago. Nor did Shrila Narottama Dasa Thakura and the other great Kirtana stalwart Acharyas later make use of the harmonium. My personal realization is that the voice of the harmonium and other similar new instruments is of a little different dimension than our Gaudiya Bhajans and Kirtans and the sound of these kind of instruments drowns off the voice of the devotee singing the kirtana. We tend to hear or focus on the instrument voice more than the Holy Names. Karatals (cymbals) and Mridanga (a specific drum) are the most sweetest for our Gaudiya Kirtana. Even similar drums like Dhola or Tabla are not used simply because Lord Gauraanga did not use them and wanted to keeo Sankirtana simple and sublime.

Of course as one cannot prevent newer things from being introduced as the time changes, and to attract the people to the Holy Names being the main consideration, our Shrila Swami Prabhupada used the harmonium for singing Bhajans. But as quoted above, he did not allow it for the Sankirtana of the Holy Names because Lord Gaura or the Acharyas did not use it for Naama Sankirtana. This instruction of Shrila Swami Prabhupada is sometimes forgotten and harmonium is used in a widespread manner even during Sankirtana of the Holy Names. Even in the present age, you will not see a harmonium or other new age instruments in the traditional Gaudiya Math kirtans or the temples.

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura writes in Sajjana Toshani 6/2:

"Singing accompanied by musical instrument began only during the time of Srinivasa Acarya. Srinivasa Acarya, Sri Narottama dasa, and Sri Syamananda Prabhu resided for some time in Vrndavana as students of Sri Jiva Gosvaml. With his approval, these three began to perform kirtana accompanied by musical instruments. All three were expert in musical science. Moreover, they were proficient in the Indian classical music of Delhi. They were also intimate friends and shared a single life goal.

"Srinivasa Acarya illumined the province of Katwa through his preaching. His area fell under the jurisdiction of the manoharasahi subdivision. Therefore the process of singing he inaugurated is called manoharasahi. Sri Narottama dasa was a resident of Kheturi village, which was under the jurisdiction of the garanahati subdivision in the district of Rajashahi, Bangladesh. That is why the process of singing he inaugurated is called garanahati. Sri Syamananda Prabhu belongs to the district of Midnapur. The process of singing he inaugurated is called reneti. In order to encourage these three musical dcdryas, Sri Jiva Gosvaml awarded them each titles. Srinivasa became known as Acarya, Sri Narottama dasa as Thakura, and Syamananda as Sri Syamananda Prabhu."

Some may ask that how can there be good accompanying music without harmonium and other new age instruments, the answer is simple. Lord Gaurahari simply desires the devotion of the devotee who sings the Kirtana, not even the tune in which he or she may be singing what to speak of the tune of the accompanying musical instruments. And if the Lord is pleased by our kirtana, then the audience will be moved and pleased. That should be our goal. Of course the devotee does try to also sing and play as melodiously as he or she can for the pleasure of the Lord and His devotees. I hope this helps.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

BBcode does not work, please use html code

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! If you now try posting on the Forums with the square brackets BBcode in your post (for quotes for example), it will give an error while posting and you lose your post if you don't copy it first. But html code works perfectly. For further information, please read this step by step basic tutorial on how to use html tags to make url links, embed photos, change font color, face etc.

Re: NITAI MORA JIVANA

Dear Srila Swami Gaurangapada and devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Srila Prabhupada! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara!

I thank you very much for your kind words of appreciation. I would say that writing rhymes is easy, but developing devotion and acquiring realization is the real thing which unfortunately I do not possess. Getting inspiration from your non-envious association and the great works of our Acaryas I can only repeat and interpret their words of glorification to the Lord.
Dear Swami Gaurangapada, your Nitai Gaura Swan Song is so nice combining beautiful language and rhyme with deep realization on and appreciation of the treasure of Nityaananda Gauraanga Naama. I relish reading it again and again and will try to translate it one day in Bulgarian with rhymes again if possible.
I feel embarassed that you want to sing my poetic interpretation on video. But if you desire to do so, please feel free to correct the text or the rhymes. It was certainly an imperfect attempt of mine to glorify Lord Nitai.
Regarding your request for more poems I would love to do that, but my time is limited since I have many other responsibilities being a householder. But whenever I get inspiration I write sometimes like this poem below which is again an English poetic interpretation of the beautiful song of Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura: mama mana mandire. I hope you will enjoy it.

The temple of my heart

My dear Lord Govinda, please hear my piteous cry
I beg you to abide here, no matter day or night

The temple of my heart is the place for You to dwell
With loving pure devotion Ill worship You, as well
with forest flower garlands and paste of sandalwood
O, will You please accept them, O, Lord of all the worlds

With all these items worship I offer you to get
Your kind and causeless mercy, while living or at death
And arati perform I toYou, for Your delight
O, youthful son of Nanda, with prema-brilliant light

The rivers of Yamuna are streaming from my eyes
In pangs of separation I spend my days and nights
I beg this blessing from Ya, to always sing Your praise
O, Govardhana-dhari, no matter time or space.

Your servant: Sarvabhauma das

Re: NITAI MORA JIVANA

This is one of the best rhyming English songs on Lord Nitaai's Glories. Absolutely beautiful Sarvabhauma dasa prabhu. You are making your spiritual name successful as Shrila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was one of the greatest poet of all times. I will sing it in a video when I find time. I can say only one thing, as Igor said, we want more! smile

Re: Forum Posts Audio in Natural Human Voice

I am a legally Blind person and I use Zoomtext with this very same speech synthesizer.  I'd like to know if anyone here knows how to edit the vocabulary in the speech synthesizer?  Or is there a way that one could Download the sanskrit vocabulary for the speech synthesizer in zomtext so that I can get the correct pronunciation while I read my E mails that I get from nitaai.net. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna

In Srimad Bhagavatam it is confirmed:

yan-namadheya-sravan anukirtanad
yat-prahvan ad yat-smaran ad api kvacit
svado 'pi sadyah savanaya kalpate
kutah punas te bhagavan nu darsanat
3.33.6

TRANSLATION

"To say nothing of the spiritual advancement of persons who see the Supreme Person face to face, even a person born in a family of dog-eaters immediately becomes eligible to perform Vedic sacrifices if he once utters the holy name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead or chants about Him, hears about His pastimes, offers Him obeisances or even remembers Him."

from Srilla Prabhupada's Purport:

"Another consideration here is that persons who are purified by the process of chanting and hearing become immediately eligible to perform Vedic sacrifices. Generally, only a person who is born in a family of brahmaṇas, who has been reformed by the ten kinds of purificatory processes and who is learned in Vedic literature is allowed to perform the Vedic sacrifices. But here the word sadyaḥ, "immediately," is used, and Sridhara Svamī also remarks that one can immediately become eligible to perform Vedic sacrifices. A person born in a family of the low caste which is accustomed to eat dogs is so positioned due to his past sinful activities, but by chanting or hearing once in pureness, or in an offenseless manner, he is immediately relieved of the sinful reaction. Not only is he relieved of the sinful reaction, but he immediately achieves the result of all purificatory processes. Taking birth in the family of a brahmaṇa is certainly due to pious activities in one's past life. But still a child who is born in a family of a brahmaṇa depends for his further reformation upon initiation into acceptance of a sacred thread and many other reformatory processes. But a person who chants the holy name of the Lord, even if born in a family of candalas, dog-eaters, does not need reformation. Simply by chanting Hare Krsna, he immediately becomes purified and becomes as good as the most learned brahmana."

Re: Lord Shiva the greatest Vaishnav

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
I would like humbly to try to discuss about this question. Very good questtion Bhakta Rahul.

1.Vishnu(Krishna) accepts only those people who are in the modes of goodness.

This is not correct. Lord Gauranga Krsna accepts all and therefore he is mahavadanya avatara - most mercifull! This process of chanting Nityananda Gauranga and Hare Krsna is completely transcendental and person who is chanting Naam is not under control of three modes of material nature. To attain spiritual world person must surpass mode of goodness also, and that is possible only when iiva start to serve Supreme Lord. Bhakti is completely transcendental and any person who is chanting Naam is high above material modes of nature, including mode of goodness.

2.It is important to chant His name in the mode of goodness i.e without offenses.

Chanting without offences is transcendental, not in mode of goodness. Mode of goodness is also burden for soul. It may lead to heavenly planets, but we want to attain spiritual world golokera prema dhana hari nama sankirtana. For ordinary person it is almost impossible to attain stage of pure chanting of Hare Krsna, because in such attempt jiva is making numerous aparadhas. But is person accepts chanting Nityananda and Gauranga Mantrarajas, such person very soon attain level of suddha-naam or pure chanting of Hare Krsna. Nitaai Naam and Gaura Naam are most merciful, nondiferrent from Nitaai (Balarama) and Gaurahari (Sri Krsna), and sure path to pure chanting of Hare Krsna.

In this age we are all sudras. That is verdict of sastras kalau sudra sambhava. We have no qualifications. But if we accept vaishava-dharma eternal religion of soul by chanting Nityananda Gauranga and Hare Krsna we automatically transcendent all modes of material nature. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyayato overcome this material nature is very hard, almost impossible. Only way to do it is to chant Nityananda, Gauranga and Hare Krsna. This process is completely transcendental and high above karma-kanda, jnjana-kanda, mystical yoga or elaborate vedic knowledge. This is eternal dharma of soul.

Dassosmi
Bhakta Igor
