Re: Lord Balarama's Bewilderment

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krsna!

Dear Jagannatha Prabhu, dandavat pranams.

I understand it is Yoga Maya. Yoga Maya is used by the Lord to reveal Himself to the devotee.

Once the Lord stopped manifesting any further potency, out of kindness, Lord Brahma once again saw the boy Krishna, with lump of food. What is of interest as this pastime is winding up, is that  Lord Brahma was given the 'most exquisite vision'. Boy Krishna sitting with his cowherd boyfriends, eating, laughing, and enjoying company.

Thus Lord Krishna's will was fulfilled - which is to satisfy His dear devotees heart. Bringing Lord Brahma to the vision of simple Vraj, in full satisfaction, thus leading Lord Brahma to heartfelt prayer.

Such a beautiful pastime. Thank you so much!

From Krsna Book by Srila Prabhupada - click here for online reading:

Krishna took compassion upon Brahmaa, who was unable even to see how He was displaying the forms of Vishnu and transforming Himself into calves and cowherd boys, and thus, while fully manifesting the Vishnu expansions, He suddenly pulled His curtain of yogamaayaa over the scene. In the Bhagavad-gitaa it is said that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not visible due to the curtain spread by yogamaayaa. That which covers the reality is mahaa-maayaa, or the external energy, which does not allow a conditioned soul to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead beyond the cosmic manifestation. But the energy which partially manifests the Supreme Personality of Godhead and partially does not allow one to see is called yogamaayaa. Brahmaa is not an ordinary conditioned soul. He is far, far superior to all the other demigods, and yet he could not comprehend the display of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; therefore Krishna willingly stopped manifesting any further potency. The conditioned soul not only becomes bewildered but is completely unable to understand. The curtain of yogamaayaa was drawn so that Brahmaa would not become more and more perplexed.

When Brahmaa was relieved from his perplexity, he appeared to awaken from an almost dead state, and he began to open his eyes with great difficulty. Thus he could see the external cosmic manifestation with common eyes. He saw all around him the superexcellent view of
Vrindaavana—full with trees—which is the source of life for all living entities. He could appreciate the transcendental land of Vrindaavana, where all the living entities are transcendental to ordinary nature. In the forest of Vrindaavana, even ferocious animals like tigers and others
live peacefully along with the deer and human beings. He could understand that because of the presence of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Vrindaavana is transcendental to all other places and is free of lust and greed.

Brahmaa thus found Shri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, playing the part of a small cowherd boy; he saw that little child with a lump of food in His left hand, searching out His friends and calves, just as He had actually been doing one year before, after their disappearance. Immediately Brahmaa descended from his great swan carrier and fell down before the Lord just like a golden stick. The word used among the Vaishnavas for offering respect is dandavat. This word means “falling down like a stick”; one should offer respect to the superior Vaishnava by falling down straight, with his body just like a stick. So Brahmaa fell down before the Lord just like a stick to offer respect; and because the complexion of Brahmaa is golden, he appeared to be like a golden stick lying down before Lord Krishna. All the four helmets on the heads of Brahmaa touched the lotus feet of Krishna. Brahmaa, being very joyful, began to shed tears, and he washed the lotus feet of Krishna with his tears. Repeatedly he fell and rose as he recalled the wonderful activities of the Lord. After repeating obeisances for a long time, Brahmaa stood up and smeared his hands over his eyes. Seeing the Lord before him, he, trembling, began to offer prayers with great respect, humility and attention.

Re: Facing severe mental difficulties

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krsna!

Dear Gurudeva and assembled devotees, please accept my full obiesances.

The way I see it spiritual life is a cultivation which purifies the subtle and gross bodies in due course. Spiritual life can be a slow and gradual development, if we are steady in day to day practice.

Through this cultivation the spiritual ego begins to appear to our mind. Even a tiny glimpse (shadow) of that true ego, by the Lord's kindness, is enough to give us resiliance while still living within the subtle body of past accumulation.

This life we may not be fully purified (as quickly as we had hoped), so tolerance and detachment (from mind/body) come to our aid. Realizing a portion of our higher self we can begin to be observers of our mind, rather than identifying with it as our true self. Infact the mind can become a tool and friend, under inspiration of super-soul (buddhi yoga). Buddhi yoga is non-different to bhakti yoga. So we see the mind as a gift (and friend) to cultivate in devotion.

With patience we tolerate the subtle and gross bodies past karma, until the Lord designs that its purpose is finished. Any suffering that arises we can acknowledge as the Lord's mercy (for our final purification), if we have cultivated the necessary qualification.

I lived with a very serious illness for ten years. And these impression may remain in my subtle body until my last breath, but they have become a spiritual substance and sacred scars.

One thing I have learnt in my present situation is that a diseased body (both subtle and gross) is not to be identified with as the reality. We know this from Sri Rupa's Upadesamrta. He gives the example of foam and bubbles in the ganges. So if the Lord desires to diminish all opulence of false attachment, we can pray to Him for the grace to press on, in service mood. Infact old age, disease and death is inevitable...

Dandavats and obeissances.

The stronger the modes of material nature act on us, the more distress we will feel mentally, and therefore the less control we have over our minds and bodies. In this passionate world these things are the norm. The mind can't stop for a second so if we are not focused on the Lord we will be focused on something else which is impermanent and we will feel anxiety because of this. If one takes to devotional service then one will gradually be purified of all such unwanted contamination. It still may be necessary for a devotee with these problems to take some sort of ayurvedic  medicine to help them with their condition. Also balance among the tridosha is necessary for health, so one must eat the right kinds of foods so as to not aggravate our conditions. Just cutting back on something like salt from the diet can really make one less irritable,  foods can play a big part in our attitude

Re: Facing severe mental difficulties

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna!

Dear Guruji, Srinath and devotees please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga.

The ultimate medicine is the holy Names of the Lord because He is non-different from His Names. When we utter the transcendental vibration of His Names we get cleansed of the material coverings that block our inherited original spiritual vision. So you are totally right to cling on to the ultimate medicine of all diseases and to seek refuge in the holy Names.

Sometimes there are chemical imbalances in the brain that causes people to be overall imbalanced and they need medical attention from a professional doctor. The example of compulsive disorder you are talking about for instance is a form of over-thinking and is related to the imbalance between the spleen and the liver. Modern medicine would prescribe anti-anxiety drugs to calm the train-of-thoughts however the problem is that it doesnt uproot the problem as a whole. Modern medicine tends to treat the symptoms rather than the root problem and it is good to look into some alternative medicine to restore the balance between the spleen and the liver. Mostly this is done by taking some herbs but is individually based and cannot be prescribed in general. The good news is that every imbalance can be brought back to balance and there are many healing modalities out there that can help. When one thing doesnt work there are still many alternatives that could help. It is the responsibility of the patients however to heal themselves rather than giving the responsibility out of hands by saying: doctor fix me! Doctors can help point you in the right direction, give you some good advice, medicines, herbs, treatments, but in the end you are your own healer. And of course the devotee knows that the ultimate balance comes from his original relationship with the Lord and as long as that is not restored there is always imbalance. In that sense we are all (severely) sick.

There is a strong similarity between the paranoid and the devotee. The paranoid sees anxieties in everything. The devotee sees the Lord in everything. Both the paranoid and the devotee are obsessed with one object that they see in everything. They are both really mad. The difference is that the paranoid is exhausted at the end of the day and the devotee is continuously refreshed. The paranoids madness is not desired while the devotees madness is desired. For an outsider the line between the two is thin and thats why the devotee normally hides his madness while the paranoids madness is always exposed.

The good news is that most people who are distressed are often closer to a spiritual revolution within themselves than normal people do. The stirred mind is more desperate and his prayers and crying is louder. Remember the four types of people who come to the Lord: The distressed, the financially distressed, the inquisitive, and those who are seeking the absolute truth. As far as the first two categories people often have to hit rock bottom before turning to the Lord. Afterwards when they found the Lord they feel blessed that they were slammed to the bottom through which their turn around was enabled.

High quality chanting is when we focus all our attention on the holy Names while we are chanting. Whenever we notice our attention has drifted away we bring it back to be on the holy Names. When we fall we stand up and we never give up. Reading scripture and listening/watching lectures from the bonafide guru further enhances the quality of our chanting as does following the rules and regulations. Thats the prescribed formula of the ultimate healing process. The problem with most aspiring devotees is that they only take half the medicine and then they say it doesnt work. But for those who are willing to take the full dose of the prescribed formula their success is guaranteed.

Your servant,

Hadai Nityananda dasa

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!
Dandavats and obeissances.

Also I believe that many of the Lord's pastimes in this material world are to teach us conditioned souls a lesson. He wanted to show that even the greatest being in the universe, Lord Brahma, has tiny insignificant powers compared to His unlimited potencies. From this pastime you can clearly see that Lord Krishna is unlimtedly superior to Brahma, the greatest material being. Some people may doubt this until they read this pastime. Like some people believe Shiva is superior to Krishna, but in the Bhagavatam the Lord defeats Shiva in battle with his sleepy and  ice weapon and Lord Shiva bows down before Krishna.  Obviously these things are  beneficial for us conditioned souls to know and understand. I am curious also if it was the material energy or yogamaya that bewildered Brahma? I would interested to know which energy the Lord used to bewilder Brahma and why.....not that it really matters
