Re: Naam-shiksha and Naam-diksha

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Thank You very much for Your enlightening video.

Now i understand that Naam-shiksha is the actual process of receiving the divine sound vibration of the Holy Names. Naam-diksha contains Naam-shiksha, but it is further formalized... Am i right? What does this formalization consist of and what is its benefit?

Re: service to others - the realm of love - video

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna!

Thank you so much Nava Gauranga dasa. I cherish this video very much. It is a milestone in your increasing realzations. How wonderful to receive the blessing from the Lord to see everything spiritualized. You see the spiritual world right here in front of you through the 'so-called' material covering. The Lord has brought His planet to you. Yes our field of service is right here helping others to awaken from the material slumber and to engage in assisting Radharani Who is the best in pleasing Lord Sri Krishna Govinda. The Lord's planet, the 'container'  in which the beautiful Lilas of the Lord are playing are nobody else than Lord Nityananda, the most mercyful manifestation and blessing of the Lord. Actually that container, the 'ground' Lord Nityananda manifests  is in our hearts. It is in our hearts that Radha and Syama are seperated from each other...and meeting each other. In that realm of eternal time Radha Krishna are eternally seperating enhancing the quality of their eternal union. In this way Their bliss is eternally expanding and the holy ground on which this happens is right in our hearts and in all the hearts around us. Yes, the spiritual realm is right here right in front of our noses and sometimes when we get a glimpse, like you got, it is hard not to cry or to faint because it all is so overwhelming beautiful that no words are able to describe what we actually experience. You are able to bring it under words and I am very, very grateful for your touching video. May the blessings of the Lord always be upon you my friend, and may the same supreme blessings of the Lord become vibrant in all living entities. How wonderful that we are allowed to partake in that most wonderful process.

Your servant,

Hadai Nityananda dasa

Naam-shiksha and Naam-diksha

Dear Swami Gaurangapada Maharaja,
Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Please accept my most respectful obeisances.

In our authorized scriptures we find many instances where our Acharyas give the instruction to Their disciples to chant the Names of Nityananda Gauranga (like e.g. in the case of Shrila Shyamananda Pandita and Shrila Advaita Acharya). So to speak, these disciples receive Nityananda Gauranga Naam through Naam-shiksha (You mentioned, that was Your case as well).

Hence, my question is: what is the difference between Naam-shiksha and Naam-diksha. As far as i understand, the difference is that in the case of Naam-shiksha there is no formal initiation. But i suppose there can be further points in this connection to be mentioned and discussed...

Thank You

Matus

Re: Will, lack self-esteem and spiritual life

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna!

1. What is cause of our weak will?

The will is not weak because our will is a gift of the Lord. It is the motivation that awakens our will. When your child would be in danger, lets say he is running towards the street with heavy traffic, you dont hesitate for a moment to save your son from going onto that street. Suddenly there is the motivation which awakens your will and, in this case, the necessary adrenaline to come to the rescue of your son.

2. How to develop burning desire for spiritual life?

In other words how do we get motivated to awaken that will. Many times the Lord gives us glimpses like Nava talks about in his video. Those glimpses are highly motivating and strengthen our will to assist Lord Gauranga in His divine mission to inundate the entire world with Krishna prema. However we are so dull that after having many glimpses we are prone to forget and slight back into material slumber. Also that is a motivation because when you slight deep enough back into the mundane the desire to go back to those happy moments with the Lord is reawakened and you pick it up right where you were when you slighted off. So the sublime glimpses as well as the deep falling are both motivators for spiritual life. It is the principle of pain and pleasure, both are motivators.

3. I was doing small research. Lack of self esteem and weak will are "modern" diseases. Many propagate use of autosuggestion? Will it help?

Yes auto-suggestion helps. We just have to create our own version of auto-suggestion. Suggestion implies self-imposition. In our case we base our knowledge on the disciplic succession which we accept and hold high above our heads. When we direct our lives in the direction of the suggested recommendations of guru and sastra our success is guaranteed.

4. Lord Chaitanya said that we should be more humble and tolerate then tree? What is difference between lack of self esteem, or will, and original humbleness?

When you are poor you are poor. When you are rich and you give up al your riches your poorness is profound. True humbleness is profound and is the opposite of weakness and lack of self-esteem.

5. Also some psychologist said that childhood have major role in our adult behavior. I had hard childhood and that reflected on my behavior, so I have pattern - not to confront to anyone - simply let it go and in material sense many are taking advantages of such behavior. Should I try to change it and oppose to others, even that requires arguing, quarrels etc or should I continue not to confront anyone?

You have to have clear boundaries and when people overstep your boundaries you should indicate so. When somebody start beating your son or your wife you will not stand by and just watch: you stand up for them even when that means you have to engage into fighting.

6. I found myself to be confused about proper way of acting. From one side - devotee should be humble and tolerant, from other side to survive in this world and render duties of material world person should be aggressive and self-oriented. How to resolve this?

Eventually we want to direct our lives in such a way that our so-called material actions will be transformed into spiritual actions. The easiest way to do that is to offer everything you do to the Lord. The only restrictions are when we are asked to engage into unethical actions: then we indicate and persist on our boundaries. You can play the (aggressive) material game as long as you dedicate all its results to the Lord. This takes the self-orientation out.

Very good questions!

Your servant,

Hadai Nityananda dasa

Kamada Ekadasi

KAmadA EkAdasii from the VarAha PurANa.
Sri SUta GoswAmi said, "Oh sages, let me offer my humble and respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord Hari, Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, by whose mercy I can describe the fast day that removes all kinds of sins.  It was to the devoted Yudhisthira that Lord Krishna glorified the twenty-four primary EkAdasiis, which destroy sin, and now I shall recount one of those narrations to you. Great-learned sages have selected these twenty-four narrations from the eighteen PurANas, for they are truly sublime.

"Yudhishthira MahArAja said, 'Oh Lord Krishna, Oh VAsudeva, please accept my humble obeisances.  Please describe to me the EkAdasii that occurs during the light part of the month of Chaitra [March-April].  What is its name, and what are its glories?'

"Lord Sri Krishna replied, 'Oh Yudhishthira, please listen to Me attentively as I relate the ancient history of this sacred EkAdasii, a history Vasishtha Muni once related to King Dilipa, the great-grandfather of Lord RAmachandra.

"'King Dilipa asked the great sage Vasishtha, "Oh wise brAhmana, I wish to hear about the EkAdasii that comes during the light part of the month of Chaitra.  Please describe it to me."

"'Vasishtha Muni replied, "Oh king, your inquiry is glorious.  Gladly shall I tell you what you wish to know.  The EkAdasii that occurs during the light fortnight of Chaitra is named KAmadA EkAdasii.  It consumes all sins, as a forest fire consumes a supply of dry firewood.  It is very purifying, and it bestows the highest merit upon one who faithfully observes it. Oh king, now hear an ancient history which is so meritorious that it removes all one's sins simply by being heard.

"'"Once, long ago, there existed a city-state named Ratnapura, which was decorated with gold and jewels and in which sharp-fanged snakes would enjoy intoxication.  King Pundarika was the ruler of this most beautiful kingdom, which numbered many Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and ApsarAs among its citizens.

"'"Among the Gandharvas were Lalita and his wife LalitA, who was an especially lovely dancer.  These two were intensely attracted to each other, and their home was full of great wealth and fine food.  LalitA loved her husband dearly, and likewise he constantly thought of her within his heart.

"'"Once, at the court of King Pundarika, many Gandharvas were dancing and Lalita was singing alone, without his wife.  He could not help thinking about her as he sang, and because of this distraction he lost track of the song's meter and melody.  Indeed, Lalita sang the ending of his song improperly, and one of the envious snakes who was in attendance at the king's court complained to the king that Lalita was absorbed in thinking of his wife instead of his sovereign.  the king became furious upon hearing this, and his eyes turned crimson with rage.  Suddenly he shouted, 'Oh foolish knave, because you were lustfully thinking of a woman instead of reverently thinking of your king as you performed your court duties, I curse you to at once become a cannibal!'

"'"Oh king, Lalita immediately became a fearful cannibal, a great man-eating demon whose appearance terrified everyone.  His arms were eight miles long, his mouth was as big as a huge cave, his eyes were as awesome as the sun and moon, his nostrils resembled enormous pits in the earth, his neck was a veritable mountain, his hips were four miles wide, and his gigantic body stood a full sixty-four miles high.  Thus poor Lalita, the loving Gandharva singer, had to suffer the reaction of his offense against King Pundarika.
"'"Seeing her husband suffering as a horrible cannibal, LalitA became overwhelmed with grief.  She thought, 'Now that my dear husband is suffering the effects of the kings' curse, what is to be my lot?  What should I do?  Where should I go?'  In this way LalitA grieved day and night.  Instead of enjoying life as a Gandharvas wife, she had to wander everywhere in the thick jungle with her monstrous husband, who had fallen completely under the spell of the king's curse and was wholly engaged in terrible sinful activities. He wandered fitfully across forbidding region, a once-beautiful Gandharva now reduced to the ghastly behaviour of a man-eater. Utterly distraught to see her dear husband suffer so much in his dreadful condition, LalitA began to cry as she followed his mad journeying.

"'"By good fortune, however, LalitA came upon the sage Shringi one day.  He was sitting on the peak of the famous VindhyAchala Hill.  Approaching him, she immediately offered the ascetic her respectful obeisances.  The sage noticed her bowing down before him and said, 'Oh most beautiful one, who are you?  Whose daughter are you, and why have you come here?  Please tell me everything in truth.'

"'"LalitA replied, 'Oh great age, I am the daughter of the great Gandharva ViradhanvA, and my name is LalitA. I roam the forests and plains with my dear husband, whom King Pundarika has cursed to become a man-eating demon.  Oh brAhmana, I am greatly aggrieved to see his ferocious form and terribly sinful activities.  Oh master, please tell me how I can perform some act of atonement on behalf of my husband.  What pious act can I perform to free him from this demonic form, Oh best of brAhmanas?'

The sage replied, 'Oh heavenly maiden, there is an EkAdasii named KAmadA that occurs in the light fortnight of the month of Chaitra.  It is coming up soon.  Whoever fasts on this day has all his desires fulfilled.  If you observe this EkAdasii fast according to its rules and regulations and give the merit you thus earn to your husband, he will be freed from the curse at once.'  LalitA was overjoyed to hear these words from the sage.

"'"Lalita faithfully observed the fast of KAmadA EkAdasii according to the instructions of the sage Shringi, and on DvAdasi she appeared before him and the Deity of Lord VAsudeva and said, 'I have faithfully observed the fast of KAmadA EkAdasii.  By the merit earned through my observance of this fast, let my husband be free from the curse that has turned him into a demoniac cannibal.  May the merit I have gained thus free him from misery.'

"'"As soon as LalitA finished speaking, her husband, who stood nearby, was at once freed from the king's curse.  He immediately regained his original form as the Gandharva Lalita, a handsome heavenly singer adorned with many beautiful ornaments.  Now, with his wife LalitA, he could enjoy even more opulence than before.  All this was accomplished by the power and glory of KAmadA EkAdasii.  At last the Gandharva couple boarded a celestial airplane and ascended to heaven."'

"Lord Sri Krishna continued, 'Oh Yudhishthira, best of kings, anyone who hears this wonderful narration should certainly observe holy KAmadA EkAdasii to the best of his ability, such great merit does it bestow upon the faithful devotee.  I have therefore described its glories to you for the benefit of all humanity.

There is no better EkAdasii than KAmadA EkAdasii.  It can eradicate even the sin of killing a brAhmana, and it also nullifies demoniac curses and cleanses the consciousness. In all the three worlds, among movable and immovable living entities, there is no better day'"

Re: The divine relationships and hierarchy within Pancha Tattva

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Yes, Lord Advaita and Lord Nityananda are Vishnu-Tattva, thus non-different from Lord Gaurahari, yet still kind of subordinate (in terms of service) to Him. So the hierarchy displayed in the picture is legitimate to some extent, isn't it?

In regards to forum color style: Actually i too sometimes face eye problems while reading. i face the same on my forum, which has similar color scheme. i don't know why is it...

Thanks a lot,

Will, lack self-esteem and spiritual life

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna
Dear Gurudeva,
few days ago you said to me that I should develop strong will. I want to ask some practical guidelines, and I think that others will also benefit from your answer.

Questions:

1. What is cause of our weak will?

2. How to develop burning desire for spiritual life?

3. I was doing small research. Lack of self esteem and weak will are "modern" diseases. Many propagate use of autosuggestion? Will it help?

4. Lord Chaitanya said that we should be more humble and tolerate then tree? What is difference between lack of self esteem, or will, and original humbleness?

6. I found myself to be confused about proper way of acting. From one side - devotee should be humble and tolerant, from other side to survive in this world and render duties of material world person should be aggressive and self-oriented. How to resolve this?

I would also like to hear what are realizations, problems, solutions of other devotees regarding this topic. Please share.

Sorry if I asked too much questions at once. I really need right answers and your help. Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krsna

Useless case,

Re: The divine relationships and hierarchy within Pancha Tattva

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! Pranams! Welcome to the Forums, Keshava dasi. Thank you for your association.

I had a re-constructed a photo of the Shri Pancha Tattva which shows all the three Lords Nitaai Gaura and Advaita on the same level They are Vishnu Tattvas. And Shri Gadadhara being Shrimati Radha Herself (Origin of Shakti Tattva) also is on the same level. Shrila Shrivasa Thakura being Bhakta Senapati or Shrila Narada himself (Shaktyavesha Jiva Tattva) is on a little lower level than the other four. I had removed the beard of Lord Advaita Acharya also because He does not have a beard according to Shrila Sarasvati Prabhupada. I seem to have lost that high resolution photo. Maybe a lower resolution is available somewhere. If anyone finds it, please post it on the forum. I hope someone can help to find it.

I am very grateful for your input about the forum color style. The dark background with a grey text is supposed to be the best for the eyes because the dark background, unlike the white or a light one, does not reflect light which causes strain to our eyes. I used a dark background Firefox addon for all sites and I have found my eye strain has considerably reduced after that. The problem though is with the old CRT monitors. They don't display this combination well and may cause eye-strain for dark backgrounds such as this one. The LCD monitors display the grey text on dark backgrounds very crisply and clearly. Though it may be possible that you have a LCD monitor and are still facing this problem. To change the present color style will take some time but let me see what I can do. There are so many settings to be changed and customizations to be ported. I will certainly try to increase the font size of the text in the posts. I may not be able to increase the font size in the viewforum and forum home pages though. Would that do?

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Re: The divine relationships and hierarchy within Pancha Tattva

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Shri Nityananda is non different from Shri Gaurahari in terms of both being the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although they are two different personalities, (please see Srimad Bhagavatam tenth canto with reference to Lord Balarama's position as non different to that of Lord Krishna).

Therefore, it should be noted that one of the greatest misunderstandings in vaishnava siddhanta is to say that Nityananda is lower in hierarchy to Lord Gauranga; they are on the same level as Gauranga Himself stated or implied in many instances in our scriptures.

On a completely different subject I would wish to make a humble request to Swami Gaurangapada; I use your website regularly and find it very uplifting and helpful to my bhajan. However, the size and color coding of the text really hurts my eyes a lot. I was wondering- if the general consensus who use this site agrees- if we could have black text on a white or lighter colored background and if you could increase the size of the text to around pt12?

Yours truly,

Keshava dasi.

Re: Writing in Vedic Sanskrit

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Here are the syllables for the Nityaananda Mantraraaja:

nityaananda = ni + tya + aa + na + nda  (five syllables)
nityaananda = nitya (eternal) + aananda (happiness)

The Full Mantra is the exact pronunciation and the Mantra should not be pronounced or remembered in the form of the separate syllables (second picture) but as the full Mantra as shown in the first picture above. The five separate syllables in the second picture are only for our knowledge and information. All devotees who want to attain Prema Bhakti should memorize at least this Sanskrit form of the Nityaananda Mantraraaja in the first picture and meditate on Nityaananda Naama during their chanting meditation.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.
