Play our Videos on TV with a DivX Certified CD, DVD or Blu-Ray Player
Dear Devotees, Nityananda!! Gauranga!! Hare Krishna!! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! We have been trying for a long time to find a common standard which will play our same original quality video file both on the internet as well as on TV without any conversion after you download it and burn it on a DVD. It seems Divx is the answer since many DVD players are DivX certified or support Divx playback from a DVD. And now with the DivX Web Player, those same files can be viewed on the internet also. It saves us the trouble of producing separating DVDs for TV viewership.
Thus, if you plan to download our future videos, burn them on a DVD (without conversion) and watch them on a TV, we would request you to buy a DVD or Blu-Ray Player which is Divx Certified or DivX Certified for Divx Ultra or Divx Certified for 720p or 1080p or Divx Certified for Divx Plus, if you are planning to buy it. Many if not most of the DVD Players are at least Divx Certified nowadays. You can find the list of some of them .com/en/partner/certified/ic">here and .com/en/partner/certified/oemodm">here.
We have tested our first Divx video on a Divx Certified DVD Player and it played well on a TV though we will need to increase the quality more for more sharpness on big screen HDTVs. One big advantage is the 6 channel sound in the original AVCHD video is preserved in the compressed Divx file. This gives a high quality surround audio while recording kirtana with chrous with mridanga and karatalas. Also this 6 channel audio in the video is not possible presently in any of the other compressed formats like MP4 or WMV without much effort if at all. Also, we can encode the original AVCHD videos directly to Divx, so it saves us a few steps in conversion which we have to pass for encoding it to MP4 or WMV.
H.264 (MP4) and WMV-VC1 video is supported in Blu-Ray DVD Players but the audio has to be in AC-3 format and the video has to be in the .ts or .m2ts container for the videos to play correctly from a Blu-Ray TV Player. So our present web MP4s and WMVs may not play on a Blu-Ray TV Player whereas the web Divx files will play if the DVD TV Player is Divx Certified. Another benefit is Blip.tv converts the Divx nicely to Flv. Another one is the nice feature of the DivX Web Player by which you can eject the video window outside the web page and keep on watching the video even while working in other programs other than your browser.
There are some disadvantages also. Divx video quality is not as good as x264 MP4 video so we will need to produce little bigger video files to try to reach the x264 MP4 quality. But a thing to be considered is that x264 MP4 video files are never going to be support by DVD Players for playback on TV. Another problem is that some of the devotees have reported problems with the Divx Web Player. For some, the audio of the video is not working and for others the video is not loading after the repeated installation of the DivX Web Player. Another disadvantage is that if we preserve the 6 channel sound, the Divx s files are not playing in the Divx Mobile Player on Windows Mobile and Symbian mobile phones. Another disadvantage is that the DivX Web Player is not yet available for Linux, iPhone and for the Google Chrome browser on PC and that Divx is not there on as many computers as the Adobe Flash Player. Another one is that Divx is not open source, so the company may go through changes at any time.
So it would be nice if some devotees want to share their thoughts on this matter regarding the above pros and cons of Divx video. I guess things will become more clearer in the next few days about our choice of formats but our NITAAI Yoga Web Player supports the playing of all types of videos now. The list of the different kinds of Divx Certification for DVD Players is given below to help you to choose your next DVD TV Player. I also wanted to write down these points so that it can help other devotees who are producing videos for the service of the Lord.
Daaso'smi, BR Sadhu Swami Gaurangapada.
