Re: Avoidance of Onion and Garlic

Nityananda, Gauranga, Hare Krishna.

I can understand some parts of the reasoning, but still have a few related questions.

As a means to identify danger, man uses his eyes, ears, taste, nose, touch and so on. Onions and garlic have this nasty smell which most animals seem to shun. This kind of behavior is the most likely copied/used by religions to avoid these plants.

Unlike onion and garlic, the origin of hing is originally not from cow's meat or bones.

Onion and garlic are only flowering plants. Who invented the story it comes from the cow’s meat or bones? This is way off, and is just as odd as the origin of the plant called mandrake.

scientifically (clinically) verified that onions or garlic increase the agitation

I’ve read other reports on garlic, onions and even chocolate which claim just the opposite. Why all of a sudden hang on to ‘scientists’ who change their logic every other day?

The food offerings to Lord Gauranga Krishna with onion or garlic are considered unacceptable.

Why is it unacceptable? What is the true reason for this?

Since leek is related to onions and garlic, are we not to eat leek as well?

Trying to understand the reasoning,

Re: Avoidance of Onion and Garlic

What is the true reason that Vaishnavas shouldnt use garlic/onions?

(1) The food offerings to Lord Gauranga Krishna with onion or garlic are considered unacceptable.
(2) It is widely accepted in all religions and can also be scientifically (clinically) verified that onion or garlic increase the agitation (mode of passion) and ignorance which is detrimental to peaceful absorption in Mantra Meditation.

And why are we allowed to use hing/asafetida?  It smells even worse than garlic.

It has not just the smell.

(3) Unlike onion and garlic, the origin of Hing is originally not from cow's meat or bones.

There is some basis in the stories about onions and garlic in all religions because the original source of onions and garlic is inauspicious. So it is not merely a coincidence that most spiritual paths suggest the avoidance of onions and garlic. In regards to the medicinal value, even chicken soup may have some medicinal value, but we don't take it due to obvious reasons. We can always find suitable medicinal alternatives to onions and garlic which can be accepted freely. Also, in a matter of life and death (survival) like a plague, accepting onions or garlic may be considered as an exceptional case if no other solution is available. But in normal considerations, no one is going to die if one eats food without onions and garlic. I hope this helps. Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna!

Re: Avoidance of Onion and Garlic

Nityananda, Gauranga, Hare Krishna.

It still seems like there is a lot of superstition and ignorance around the use of garlic and onion. Every now and again one reads articles to prove or disprove these products. In Christian tradition for example, garlic and onion arose in the footprints of the devil when he left the Garden of Eden. With all due respect to Christianity, but this story should not be taken too literally.

Both garlic and onions are known for their natural antibiotic and antiseptic qualities. In France, it has been used with success as a remedy against the plague during the 16th century. It has many advantages, but the scent drives (not only) people away from it. Hence all the silly stories…

What is the true reason that Vaishnavas shouldn’t use garlic/onions? And why are we allowed to use hing/asafetida?  It smells even worse than garlic.

Re: Naam-shiksha and Naam-diksha

Matus wrote: Do I have a responsibility now for that soul?

No. You have become the Vartma Patha Pradarshaka (Path Showing) Guru by introducing a person to chanting the Holy Names and chanting with him or her. Responsibility or transfer of karma only occurs when the Guru and Disicple both mutually agree for such a relationship at the time of Diksha. A Patha Pradarshaka Guru does not take any responsibility of karma of the student whom he or she is teaching or guiding. Of course, in one way since we all are part and parcels of the Lord, we may feel some responsibility to bring other souls (our brothers) to the shelter of His Holy Names and Lotus Feet and that is certainly very pleasing to Lord Gaura Krishna.

The Cosmic Math Proves God Exists

Hubble scientists say their mind-boggling picture is like a "core sample" of the universe, made of light instead of Arctic ice. Imagine, the scientists say, that you're looking through an 8-foot-long soda straw, where each galaxy you see is a different distance from the Earth.

Remember, too, that you're looking back in time, as light from a galaxy 13 billion light years away takes 13 billion years to get here. Those 10,000 galaxies are spread both through space and 13 billion years of cosmic history--all packed into a slice of sky just one-tenth of the diameter of the full moon.

So, how many 8-foot-long straws would Hu
bble have to suck the universe through to taste the entire sky? According to the experts, about 12.7 million. They say the plucky telescope would need about a million years of uninterrupted time to make the images, too.

If each of those 12.7 million straws sucked in another 10,000 galaxies, we'd have about 127 billion galactic neighbors. Some estimates count on only 100 billion galaxies showing up in the census. Others think we'd find five times that.

It's best not to even think about how many stars that is. On a dark night in the country, you can see a few thousand. Yet astronomers guess there are anywhere from 100 billion to 1 trillion stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone. Multiply the low number by 100 billion galaxies and you get at least 10 sextillion stars. That's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

The real number could be ten times that. Or a hundred times that. Some NASA experts put the figure at a "zillion." No one knows. Astronomers are used to working with scary numbers, but when it comes to counting the stars in the firmament, most say that counting all the grains of sand from all the deserts and beaches of the world would be easier.

Experts estimate that 10 percent of the Milky Way's 200 to 400 billion stars have planetary systems, and that 30 percent of the stars with planetary systems have more than one planet. So the 300 exoplanets detected so far are a drop in the galactic bucket.

And that's just the Milky Way bucket. As we mentioned earlier this week, some estimates say a universal census would count at least 100 billion galaxies. Those billions of galaxies include billions of billions of stars. Even if only a fraction of those have planetary systems, the number of exoplanets is downright astronomical.

If only this Universe is so inconceivably gigantic according to the scientists with zillions of galaxies, one cannot even imagine the size of the other Universes some of which are millions of time bigger than our Universe (As described in the Pastime of Brahma meeting Lord Krishna). That would be a million multiplied by a zillion which is almost infinite (but inconceivably still finite).

According to the Vedas, our Universe is one of the smallest. There are zillions of other Universes in this material creation. And the material creation is only 1/4th of Lord Gauranga Krishna. The spiritual creation is 3/4th. So the Lord's spiritual creation is unimaginably extensive and variegated with zillions of non-destructible spiritual planets with eternal life (no birth, death, old age and disease). And there is one form (expansion) of Lord Gauranga Krishna who is worshipable Deity of each of those spiritual planets. He is the Lord of all the residents of that planet. Thus, one can imagine how the Supreme Lord assumes zillions of Vishnu Forms to accept the services of each of His devotees according to their specific mood and affection. Let this inconceivable Cosmic Maths which cannot be grasped by our tiny puny brains, strengthen our faith in the Existence and Omniscience of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Gauranga Krishna and make it irrevocable. Thus, instead of trying to become God, we should endeavor to love and please Him by becoming the servant of His servants.

Who Blocks the Earth's Sound

Scientists have made new recordings of the sounds of the earth, and this time its not songs of the whales and the drumming of rain, but charged particles from the solar wind colliding with Earth’s magnetic field.

The sounds are blocked from our hearing by the ionosphere, or charged layer on top of our atmosphere, which is good because apparently they sound awful, and reportedly would overwhelm all radio stations on the planet.

Though scientists had previously thought that these screeching radio waves just oozed into space, recent research shows that Earth’s racket is actually beamed off into space, making it easier for aliens to listen in, should they tire of their own cosmic rock.

But have they considered who made such a perfectly systematic arrangement of blocking the sounds to enable our survival on earth? They may say that it happened randomly simply by chance but the Vedas tell us that it has been arrangeed by Supreme Creator and Designer Lord Gauranga Krishna Himself!

The Core of Brilliance Personality

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! This is from a conversation I had on another site with another person.

But is that not what the soul is - esssentially? As any attributes you assign to your soul now are actually part of your earthly personality. Your likes/dislikes, memories, plans, etc.

Wihout memory of the past, we are nothing. Since memory is an atrribute of the physical body, the nature of a soul would be impersonal.  by shvu

God is quite personal in that consciousness is the window that all existence can be experienced within 'soul'. We can literally experience all of existence....ie..... see elightenment as defined in buddhism

Mind is simply for defining what we experience and as you shared perfectly, mind is bound to the body but the consciousness upon that body, is the life eternal and in all parts;............... of God........ by bishadi

This is common thinking amongst the thoughtful. And in a sense this oneness is factual. Even though personally I do not perceive myself as 'God'...but a part of God...with a limited field of consciousness.

That limited field of consciousness, in contact with mind, can travel and perceive vast area...but not all area (at once). And is tainted with a subjective experience (until we expand further). But ofcourse expanding further, higher intellect presses down (buddhi)...to 'see' objectively...and partially the experience of 'super'subjectivity'. Infact such vision is possibly the saving grace of man 'personality'. And this seeing becomes union. We become spiritual man. The potential for an organic whole on planet earth. Some forward thinking, excellent, non-sectarian christians call this 'the christ' and can see a fulfillment of earth gradually unfolding. The omega!

I can understand your point bishadi.

But...if there is a two sided coin (and it is possible). Maybe such a presentation is half the coin. Look at it this way....you and me have seen how great...how wonderful....how joyous...how magnificent...how much a blast...is this god 'personality experience'. By applying good intelligence...could we be limiting ourself by limiting the possibility of more of God. The other side to the coin. A positive spiritual existence of pure form....

Personally I think if we deny the existence of such a realm...and Divine Personage with associates, spiritual planets etc...we are limiting the unlimited possibility and greatness of God.

The argument of the person who denies such....would be....'we have not seen such'. My argument would be...how do you know others haven't? And then I would say....go deeper...use full the faculty of man and your personality....to discover more of your true self...which is truly exquisite!

Some may say...we have not seen...therefore we do not accept. Well, have we seen all in the material nature. I have seen a brown raindow at night, while living in Guatemala. People do not belive me. Yesterday I saw a huge colored cloud...shining from a reflection of the sun...two other people saw it too. The rest would think we were mad. Why do people not see...because they limit themselves. God has no limit. They choose not to see...to slow and look!

And as you have said bishadi....personality is a blast! I would say God is fantastic....and Personality is the core of excellence!
The author penned Vedic scripture which points to such personality as described above (by giving a picture of such). The Srimad Bhagavatam shows the apex (personality)...(the commentators) who were brave enough to go deeper and being full of compassion, wrote for the neophyte.

Those who are not neophyte...can utilize that text...to go deeper also. The neophyte can accept the text by face value and advance.

The topmost devotee...never limits God in any regard. And is forever free. And sees text 'as it is' with his divine vision. by Nava

The expert topmost persons have no direct need for this book other than to strengthen their own conclusions. Still, they should discuss this book with due respect in order to benefit the madhyama-adhikaris. Therefore it is the madhyama-adhikaris who are the proper candidates for studying this book. All the above-mentioned three categories of people are qualified to study Shrimad Bhagavatam, yet most of the commentaries on this matchless book are composed for the benefit of the neophytes. The commentators were all swanlike persons, and they have exhibited more compassion towards the neophytes than towards the madhyamas. Whenever they discuss jnana, they are referring to brahma-jnana, or the impersonal understanding of the Absolute Truth. Therefore modern speculators are not benefited. Nowadays many people of our country discuss foreign literature and science with a desire to scrutinize its significance. They quickly become faithless after observing the indirect presentations by the writers of the scripture and the scriptural commentaries that are appropriate for the above-mentioned neophytes. They then either adopt a different religion or become famous by introducing a new one. The danger with this is that such people uselessly waste their time inventing a new level of understanding while leaving aside the previous mahajanas' perfect path, which automatically uplifts one from a lower qualification to a higher one. If there were some literatures appropriate for the madhyama-adhikaris to discuss, then no anarthas, or unwanted things, in the form of sub-religion, cheating religion, or irreligion would have entered India. The principal purpose of this book is to fulfill the above-mentioned requirement. Actually this book will directly and indirectly benefit all three types of persons—the uttama, madhyama, and kanishtha. Therefore they should all respect this book. Avoidance of Onion and Garlic

(1) Garlic Is Toxic

The reason garlic is so toxic: the sulphone hydroxyl ion penetrates the blood-brain barrier, just like DMSO, and is a specific poison for higher  ife-forms and brain cells. We discovered this, much to our horror, when I (Bob Beck, DSc) was the world’s largest manufacturer of ethical  EEG feedback equipment. We’d have people come back from lunch that looked clinically dead on an encephalograph, which we used to calibrate their  rogress. “Well, what happened?” “Well, I went to an Italian restaurant and there was some garlic in my salad dressing!” So we had ’em sign things that they wouldn’t touch garlic before classes or we were wasting their time, their money and my time.

I guess some of you who are pilots or have been in flight tests... I was in flight test engineering in Doc Hallan’s group in the 1950’s. The flight surgeon  would come around every month and remind all of us: “Don’t you dare touch any garlic 72 hours before you fly one of our airplanes, because  it’ll double or triple your reaction time. You’re three times slower  than you would be if you’d not had a few drops of garlic.”

Well, we didn’t know why for 20 years later, until I owned the Alpha-Metrics Corporation. We were building biofeedback equipment and found out that  garlic usually desynchronizes your brain waves.

So I funded a study at Stanford and, sure enough, they found that it’s a poison. You can rub a clove of garlic on your foot, and you can smell it shortly later on your wrists. So it penetrates the body. This is why DMSO smells a lot like garlic: that sulphone hydroxyl ion penetrates all the barriers,  including the corpus callosum in the brain. Any of you who are organic gardeners know that if you don’t want to use DDT, garlic will kill anything in the way of insects.

Now, most people have heard most of their lives that garlic is good for you, and we put those people in the same class of ignorance as the mothers who at the turn of the century would buy morphine sulphate in the drugstore and give it to their babies to put ’em to sleep.

If you have any patients who have low-grade headaches or attention deficit disorder, they can’t quite focus on the computer in the afternoon, just do an experiment – you owe it to yourselves. Take these people off garlic and see how much better they get, very very shortly. And then let them eat a little  garlic after about three weeks. They’ll say, “My God, I had no idea that this was the cause of our problems.” And this includes the de-skunked garlics, Kyolic, some of the other products.

Very unpopular, but I’ve got to tell you the truth.

From Nexus Magazine Feb/Mar 2001.
Source: From a lecture by Dr. Robert C. Beck, DSc, given at the Whole Life
Expo, Seattle, WA, USA, in March 1996.

Bob Beck also found in his research on human brain function in the 1980’s that garlic has a detrimental effect on the brain and researching this further he learned that many yoga groups and philosophical teachings caution against the use of garlic and onions as they are known to interfere with meditation practices. Some aware individuals have actually described themselves as experiencing brain fog after having garlic.

(2) Bone of Cow becomes Garlic & meat becomes Onion

The Vedas state that onion and garlic came from the dead body of a murdered cow and therefore they are considered like eating meat. They break the non-vegetarian principle from the strict Vedic shastric point of view. Strict vegetarians don’t eat onion nor garlic. Since meat is tamasic (mode of ignorance), onions and garlic are also tamasic and rajasic food (mode of ignorance and passion). They may have some medicinal value like even wine is used in medicines sometimes but no one will die without eating them. Devotees do not eat onion and garlic also for the reason that they cannot offer the food cooked with onion and garlic to the Lord as per the principles of Bhakti yoga. So if the Lord does not accept it, then the devotees do not get prasadam.

“Once, in Satya Yuga the rishis were performing gomedha and asvamedha sacrefices for the welfare of the whole universe. A cow or a horse would be cut into pieces and placed in the fire. Afterwards the risis would utter mantras and the same animal would come alive in a beautiful young body. One time the risi who was about to perform a gomedha sacrifice, his wife was pregnant. She had a very strong desire to eat and she had heard that if, during pregnancy one has a desire to eat and does not fullfil this, then the baby that will be born will always have saliva coming from its mouth. Very strangely, she desired strongly to eat meat, thus she decided to keep one piece of meat of the cow’s body that was offered in sacrifice. She hid it and was making a plan to eat it very soon. At that time the rishi was finishing the sacrifice and uttered all the mantras for the new young cow to come to life. However when he saw the new cow, he noticed that there was a little part missing from her left side. He went into meditation and realized that his wife had taken away a piece of meat during the sacrifice. Now his wife also understood what happened and quickly threw the meat far away in a field. Due to the effect of the mantras uttered by the rishi there was now life in this piece of meat. Then the bones in that piece of meat became garlic and the meat became onions in that field. Thus these foods are never taken by any Vaishnava devotee because it is not vegetarian. Plus it is in the mode of ignorance."

(3) Blood of demon Saimhikeya becomes Onion & Garlic

Here is another story, from Puranic Encylopedia by Vettam Mani (under CANDRA VI.), (Kamba Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda and Bhagavata, Astama Skandha. Kamba Ramayana is a Tamil text by poet Kambar):

“Solar eclipse according to the Puranas. The Devas and the asuras jointly churned Ksirabdhi wherefrom emerged Dhanvantari with the Amrtakumbha (pot of nectar). But an asura mayavi (magician) called Saimhikeya absconded to Patala with the Amrtakumbha which nobody noticed as everybody was busy with dividing other divine objects. Only after the mayavi’s disappearance was it noticed that the Amrtakumbha was missing. At once Mahavishnu assumed the figure of a beautiful woman, got back the Kumbha and gave it to the devas. The devas began drinking the amrta when, at the instance of some other devas, Saimhikeya, the mayavi, assuming the form of an old Brahmin reached svarga, got a share of the amrta and began to drink it. Surya and Candra (Sun and Moon) who were on guard at the gates divined the secret of the ‘old Brahmin’ and informed Mahavishnu about it. He cut the throat of the pseudo-Brahmin with his Sudarsana Chakra. But, half of the nectar he had drunk stayed above the throat and the other half below it. Therefore, though the head and the trunk were severed they remained alive. These two parts, in course of time, evolved as Rahu and Ketu.

When the throat was cut some blood dropped on on the ground, and became the red onion and the white onion (garlic) respectively. So both onion and garlic originated from the throat and blood of the demons or asuras, thus their consumption brings us closer to tamo guna (mode of ignorance) which characterizes the nature of the demons and thus is detrimental to Bhakti.”

(4) Scientific Facts about Garlic

Garlic and onions are libido enhancers. When you lean towards spiritualism you lean away from the worldly things. Because of its stimulating qualities, garlic was never part of Buddhist tradition in China or Japan, whose practitioners felt it would upset one’s spiritual balance. Garlic was never adopted into traditional Japanese cuisine and was shunned by Zen masters.

The Greek citizenry, especially the aristocracy, firmly rejected garlic and found its smell repugnant. Anyone smelling of garlic was considered vulgar and was prevented from entering the temples. However, in Aristophanes’ play Wives at the Feast of Thesmophores, the women who were cheating on their husbands found garlic the perfect cover-up for a night of indulgence.
Garlic Like the Greeks, the early Roman nobility did not embrace garlic in their own diets but considered the herb worthy only of being fed to the laborers and slaves, to give them strength and vigor. Any man smelling of garlic was considered of low breeding. Horace, Roman lyric poet and satirist (65 to 8 BCE), said of garlic in his Epodes, it is “more poisonous than hemlock.”

Hippocrates did warn that garlic “caused flatulence, a feeling of warmth on the chest and a heavy sensation in the head; it excites anxiety and increases any pain which may be present. When the British colonized India, they noticed that lepers were peeling and consuming garlic non-stop. The British began referring to leprosy as the “peelgarlic disease.” Today Hindus and Brahmins eschew garlic and onions, believing they are too stimulating and interfere with the ability to reach a high spiritual plain in meditation and self-reflection.

Some do not eat garlic or onions because they practice ahimsa, the philosophy of non-violence. Concern that they might be destroying potential life forms or souls, they recognize that a bulb of garlic, with its many individual cloves, could possibly produce many more plants.

In Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, the character Bottom tells the other actors not to eat garlic or onion, “for we are to utter sweet breath.”

The seventeenth century British view of garlic was solidly negative, with expressions like, “not fit for Ladies’ Palates, nor those who court them,” or that eating garlic “was part of the Punishment for such as had committed the horrid’st Crimes.” When famous poet Percy Shelley visited Italy with his friend Lord Byron, he was shocked and appalled to see his friend eating the garlic that was served at a social gathering.

(5) Scientific Facts about Onion

Onions contain complex sulphur compounds. When you cut into an onion, two chemical reactions take place. First, when a knife cuts through the cells of an onion, its enzymes release a strong odor. Second, the onion releases allicin, a volatile sulfur gas that irritates the eyes and sends one rushing for a tissue. One cannot deny the power of the onion on the olfactory senses. The rich found the odor downright disgusting. From ancient history up to the 19th century, onions were relegated as the food for the poor. The Code of Hammurabi, known as the ancient law of Mesopotamia, shows great concern for the needy by providing them a monthly ration of bread and onions, a ration that comprised the mainstay of the peasant diet. As disagreeable as the onion was to the aristocrats, the peasants devoured them completely raw.

Apparently onions took on dual status in the attitudes in the ancient world. In Egypt they were highly revered by the poor and eaten extensively along with bread and beer. A small sect of Egyptian priests, however, were forbidden to eat them. Onions may have been reviled by those in high positions. In India Brahmins and others are also forbidden to eat onions, even today. We’re all familiar with onion breath. Perhaps that is why the upper classes, such as the Brahmins of India, turned up their noses. In Pompeii those “lowly vendors” who sold onions were rejected from the guild of fruit and vegetable vendors, and had to form their own guild.

The pungent odor and awesome strength of the onion was a mystery to ancient man. An old Turkish legend explains it rather profoundly. It tells that when Satan was thrown out of heaven, garlic sprouted where he first placed his left foot, and onions grew where he placed his right foot.

(6) Some Quotes from the Vedic Puranas about Onion and Garlic

(a) By eating garlic and onion one becomes sinful and as atonement one should perform Chandrayana. Gaurda Purana 1.97.3(68-71)

(b) Onion, Selu, garlic, Goplyusa (milk of a cow before the lapse of ten days from calving), Tanduliya (a grain growing in faecal rubbish) and mushrooms— all these are to be avoided. Skanda Purana : Chapter 40 -- Verse 9

(c) (But) he should avoid stalks of lotuses, safflower, gold or silver,  onion, garlic, sour gruel, a thick fluid substance; so also chatraka (a kind of mushroom), vidvaraha, greasy milk of a cow during the first seven days of calving, vilaya (a particular product of milk) and mushrooms. By eating the small red variety of garlic, blossoms of kimsuka, a gourd, so also udumbara, bottle-gourd, a twice-born becomes fallen. Padma Purana Vol. 42 Part 4CHAPTER FIFTYSIX --- verse 19b -24.

(e)  I shall now mention those things that should always be avoided in Sraddha. Garlic, onions, globular radish and Karambha (groats or flour mixed with curds), and other articles devoid of smell and with no taste should be avoided in Sraddha. The reason is also mentioned (as follows):  Formerly in the fight between Devas and Asuras, Bali was defeated by Suras. From his wounds drops of blood gushed out and from them these articles grew up- Hence they are avoided in the Sraddha rite. Varaha Purana Chapter 16 -- verse 11b - 15

(f) The expiation for having eaten the prohibited food is fasting. One should do the stiuka expiation (Sucandrayana) for having eaten bhustma (a kind of fragrant grass) and garlic. Agni Purana Chapter 173 -- verse 37

(7) Mercy to Other Living Beings

Mercy towards animals by not eating their flesh is a basic symptom of the most basic class of devotees known as kanishtha adhikaris. Below the lowest kanishtha adhikari devotee stage is the level of the four kinds of people who approach the Lord for money, removal of distress, inquiry and knowledge. Sometimes Lord Gauranga Krishna engages such persons who do not show mercy to animals in His service and accepts some services from them. That is the independant desire of the Lord and we cannot question why is He doing it. Just because the Lord is accepting their services does not mean that we have to start imitating those people and become cruel-hearted towards animals as the Lord may be accepting their services only as a very special case and He may not be necessarily pleased with that kind of services. Instead we should follow His instructions in the Gita…”I accept a leaf, flower, fruit and some water which is offered to Me with devotion by a devotee with a pure heart.” Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Guru Parampara!

Transcendental Currency

From Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura's Godruma Kalpatavi, The Desire Tree of Godruma.

Description of the Transcendental Currency

1. Sraddha (faith) is compared to a paisa (a small coin worth only 2-5 cents) by which the Holy Name can be be purchased.

2. Nistha (steady devotional service) is compared to two annas or a 1/8 silver coin by which the Holy Name imbued with the Lord's form (rupa-yukta-nama) can be purchased.

3. Ruci (taste) is compared to four annas or a 1/4 silver coin by which the Holy Name imbued with the Lord's qualities (guna-yukta-nama) can be purchased.

4. Asakti (attachment) is compared to a 1/2 silver coin by which the Holy Name imbued with the Lord's pastimes (lila-yukta-nama) can be purchased.

5. Bhava or Rati (preliminary ecstatic love of Godhead) is compared to a silver coin by which the Holy Name imbued with transcendental mellow (rasita-yukta-nama) can be purchased.

6. Prema (pure love of Godhead) is compared to a golden coin by which the Holy Name imbued with the full potency of all transcendental mellows (sarva-rasa-yukta-nama) can be purchased.

According to the price one pays one will receive the corresponding commodity. But there is a mystery here: when the customer pays and gets the Holy Name and chants the Holy Name, by the mercy of` the owner and His partners, the customer gets back his original payment multiplied many times
over.

Commodities for Sale in the Market

The Holy Name (nama), compared to sugarcane juice.

The Holy Name imbued with the Lord's form (rupa-yukta-nama), compared to liquid molasses (gur).

The Holy Name imbued with the Lord's qualities (guna-yukta-nama), compared to solid molasses.

The Holy Name imbued with the Lord's pastimes (lila-yukta-nama), compared to sugar: "

The Holy Name imbued with transcendental mellow (rasita-nama), compared to rock candy. "

The Holy Name imbued with the full potency of all transcendental mellows (sarva-rasa-yukta-nama), compared to lozenges made from rock candy.

Rules of Payment

"Rupees, Paisa, Silver or Gold Coins are not the real currency to purchase the commodities sold in the market place of the Holy Name.  Transcendental faith and the like is the the only acceptable currency. Anyone who tries to purchase the above commodities with ordinary material currency makes a great mistake."
