Re: Avoidance of Onion and Garlic
Nityananda, Gauranga, Hare Krishna.
It still seems like there is a lot of superstition and ignorance around the use of garlic and onion. Every now and again one reads articles to prove or disprove these products. In Christian tradition for example, garlic and onion arose in the footprints of the devil when he left the Garden of Eden. With all due respect to Christianity, but this story should not be taken too literally.
Both garlic and onions are known for their natural antibiotic and antiseptic qualities. In France, it has been used with success as a remedy against the plague during the 16th century. It has many advantages, but the scent drives (not only) people away from it. Hence all the silly stories…
What is the true reason that Vaishnavas shouldn’t use garlic/onions? And why are we allowed to use hing/asafetida? It smells even worse than garlic.
