Free Download Manager

Respected Swamiji and All Vaisnavas,

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna! Please accept my respectful obeisances!

There is a program called Free download Manager that can be downloaded by searching in google.

Free download manager can download any file, including Videos from Youtube  directly simply by copying and pasting the webpage link in the Add downloads box . It is a wonderful program and accelerates downloads by about 5x normal speed by parallel streaming. But it does not work very well with files from nitaai.com and one has to restart downloads often to complete it. It is very simple and straightforward to use.

One has to download and install Free download manager, then open it and click the uploads tab (by default it opens in the downloads tab) at the top and add the file clicking the plus button at the very top...etc...etc. The link is automatically generated. No upload limits.

It includes an upload manager that uploads any file on the hard disk to a temporary location on a server called Wikifortio. The uploads will stay on the server for maximum of one month and the time and no. of downloads can all be decided by the user.

The Devotee Shukadeva and the Impersonalist Shuka

Respected Swamiji and Vaisnavas,

  Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Jaya Visnupada Srila Prabhupada!

Jaya Swami Gaurangpada!

All glories to the guru parampara!

All glories to the Vaisnavas!

It is often claimed by many over here that Suka's disciple was Gaudapada (Sankaracharya's parama guru) and so a big offence is committed by thinking Vyasadeva to be Mayawadi in gross ignorance.

Srila Prabhupada writes in Srimad Bhagavatam 9.21.25

sa krtvyam suka-kanyayam

brahmadattam ajijanat

yogi sa gavi bharyayam

visvaksenam adhat sutam

SYNONYMS

sah -- he (King Nipa); krtvyam -- in his wife, Krtvi; suka-kanyayam -- who was the daughter of Suka; brahmadattam -- a son named Brahmadatta; ajijanat -- begot; yogi -- a mystic yogi; sah -- that Brahmadatta; gavi -- by the name Gau or Sarasvati; bharyayam -- in the womb of his wife; visvaksenam -- Visvaksena; adhat -- begot; sutam -- a son.

TRANSLATION

King Nipa begot a son named Brahmadatta through the womb of his wife, Krtvi, who was the daughter of Suka. And Brahmadatta, who was a great yogi, begot a son named Visvaksena through the womb of his wife, Sarasvati.

PURPORT

The Suka mentioned here is different from the Sukadeva Gosvami who spoke Srimad-Bhagavatam. Sukadeva Gosvami, the son of Vyasadeva, is described in great detail in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana. There it is said that Vyasadeva maintained the daughter of Jabali as his wife and that after they performed penances together for many years, he placed his seed in her womb. The child remained in the womb of his mother for twelve years, and when the father asked the son to come out, the son replied that he would not come out unless he were completely liberated from the influence of maya. Vyasadeva then assured the child that he would not be influenced by maya, but the child did not believe his father, for the father was still attached to his wife and children. Vyasadeva then went to Dvaraka and informed the Personality of Godhead about his problem, and the Personality of Godhead, at Vyasadeva's request, went to Vyasadeva's cottage, where He assured the child in the womb that he would not be influenced by maya. Thus assured, the child came out, but he immediately went away as a parivrajakacarya. When the father, very much aggrieved, began to follow his saintly boy, Sukadeva Gosvami, the boy created a duplicate Sukadeva, who later entered family life. Therefore, the suka-kanya, or daughter of Sukadeva, mentioned in this verse is the daughter of the duplicate or imitation Sukadeva. The original Sukadeva was a lifelong brahmacari.

Bhakta Prajnana Kesava Maharaja confirms from the Hari Vamsa that there were two Sukas. Since the text is full of diacritics I find it impossible to paste it here. If someone can find a way to remove them out and convert into normal font I can paste it in a subsequent post

Aspiring to be your servant,

Srinath

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Thank you Igor for your nice post about the mystery of the lives of the pure devotees.

When sage Narada wanted to learn about power of Lord's illusory energy, he took birth as "ordinary" human being, have wife and children etc.

Just a small note. Shrila Narada Muni did advent as the exceptional householder and leader of all Vaishnavas, Shrila Shrivasa Thakura, in Kali Yuga. The other story floating around about Shrila Narada coming as a another ordinary householder and becoming illusioned by Maya is not quite supported by our Acharyas and Vedic scriptures.

Dear Srinath, Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! Pranams! I have been quite interested in this book for some time but not able to procure a copy of this book. Would it be possible for you to courier me a photocopy of this book if you happen to have one? I have great respect for the direct writings of Shrila Bhakti Pragyaana Keshava Maharaja and fully recommend all devotees to read his direct writings, though only a few of them may be available in the English language. He is one of the great scholars on Gaudiya Vaishnava Vedanta in accordance with the instructions given to him by his Gurudeva Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada. His unbounded love for his Gurudeva Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada has always been a source on inspiration for me. The inspiration and backing he gave to our Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to accept sannyasa and fulfill the order of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada to preach in the Western countries, was also a very important chapter in the history of the preaching movement.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Jaya Swami Gaurangpada!

All glories to the guru parampara!

I fall at your feet repeatedly as I find no words to glorify your mercy in forgiving sinful souls like us. If you did not forgive us, no one in material creation could get any bhakti at all.

Thank you for raising some important clarifications on the Buddha Avatara. In this regard I suggest reading the book written by Srila Bhakta Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja called "Beyond Nirvana. The philosophy of Mayavadism".  It deals with the full subject matter at length.

One important point in this book is that it mentions a completely different history of another Sankaracharya, who is considered in South India (from where I am) as Abhinava Shakaracharya, who clearly appears to be different from the Adi Sankaracharya considered as an incarnation of Siva. I have heard that this history is supported by the Madhva School.

In your service,

Dear Damodara Svarupa dasa, Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! Jaya Shri Guru Parampara! Pranams!

Yes, that is what it is. This is a friendly, open yet honest discussion, not at all meant to offend or whatsoever.

Thanks so much for kind understanding.

While looking through the glasses of my Christian background, Im trying to understand what Youre saying and why Youre stating things. And these so-called differences (between our cultures) are not always easy to comprehend.

I can fully understand. Differences in cultures and language do take a lot of effort on our part to reach to the truth. Christianity in it's original pure form is quite similar to the pure Vaishnava philosophy. Presently there are so many branches, different philosophies, paths etc. under the broad umbrella of Christianity which may be quite different to Christianity in it's original devotional form as taught by Jesus, which is what makes it more difficult. Especially if the impersonal or formless philosophy seeps in then it becomes quite different from the pure devotional path. I have not studied all the different paths or philosophies in Christianity to actually discuss them.

Theres been a lot of writing on the live of St Benedictus. And he had lots of devils to deal with.  Thanks to the vivid hagiography by Pope Gregorius, we learn a lot on how St Benedictus overcame his devils, even his mundane devils. This teaching by example is what Im looking for. It shows the process how a man gradually becomes a pure devotee and by the Grace of God becomes a saint.

There is a difference in the biographies of two different kinds of saints. There are nitya-baddha souls who slowly elevate themselves to an advanced position. They have to struggle and attain success. They are quite glorious because they accomplish an almost impossible task of overcoming Maya by the mercy of the Lord. There are nitya-siddhas who directly descend from the spiritual world (associates of the Lord). In their case, there may or may not be struggles in their lives. And if there are struggles they are different than in the first case. They are deliberately orchestrated in their lives by the Lord Himself to glorify them further in this world. The nitya-siddhas never have to struggle actually because Maya cannot even come close to them as they are already perfected souls. Their lives may look like a struggle but it is not. They never come under illusion or Maya's influence nor do they have to internally struggle with any 'devils'. Thus, their biographies have to be written in an even more careful and very very respectful manner so as not to spread wrong information about them or make them look like nitya-baddhas. Thanks again. I am thankful you are kindly trying so sincerely to understand this discussion inspite of the cultural and language differences.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Re: Diary of chanting aspirant

.

We may look at diamond from many different sides and according to our position we may see different colors. Similar, to know one requires one. That is why activities of pure devotees are mystery and we may not understand them completely.

If we are looking from mundane perspective we will be confused. Srilla Haridasa Thakur was born in Muslim family. Was he vegetarian in his childhood?  Jagai and Madhai were committed to drinking and lusting but they were  Jaya and Vijaya. Prahlada Maharaja was raised in demoniac environment and his teachers tried to learn him all kind of material "knowledge". When sage Narada wanted to learn about power of Lord's illusory energy, he took birth as "ordinary" human being, have wife and children etc. How we can understand this? Vrtasura was great devotee but still he was playing role of great „deamon“. Is this part of major, Lord’s plan?

Acharyas and great saints are teaching by example. To lead and instruct persons in this fallen age, Acharya will not come floating with shining aura around. No. To understand acharya or advanced devotee we need real sight. Just like our Srilla Prabhupada. We may learn a lot from his life.

Do great saints, gurus and acharyas have „human“ side of life, or only divine,  1008% absorb in pastimes of Radha-Krsna? Do such elevated souls also feel attractions and attachments for their parents, sons, friends or they are look at them equally as other souls? Are they feeling pain, sorrow, depression, diseases? May them also be subjective? Or not?

Open conversation and taboo-free attitude are needful for successful preaching in this times. This is simply nature of today’s world. Should spirituality be taboo-free? Is real spirituality dogma or not? Where is that tiny line between?  That is question that puzzles many persons.

100 hundreds years ago humanity was completely different. If we need to bring knowledge in modern society we must accept what is their present stage and preach according to that. Srilla Prabhupada is great example. He changed so many things according to modern times. Many persons did not understand for example why he allowed womens to be part of ashrams or some other things, but he made necessary arrangements according to time, place and circumstances. Activities of such great souls are not easy to understand.

To understand hagiographies of pure devotees we also need to become pure devotee. Sometimes we may read or find many confusing points or "facts", but to understand them we need to be on right level of understanding.

Re: Initiation + lifetimes to reach the pure name

Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna!

Dear Gurudeva, Bhakta Srinath and devotees, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga.

Sri Krishna Himself is very explicit about the fate of the unsuccessful yogi in the bhagavad gita:

ayatih sraddhayopeto
yogac calita-manasah
aprapya yoga-samsiddhim
kam gatim krsna gacchati

"What is the destination of the man of faith who does not persevere, who in the beginning takes to the process of self-realization but who later desists due to worldly-mindedness and thus does not attain perfection in mysticism?" (Bg. 6.37) In other words, he is asking what becomes of the unsuccessful yogi, or the person who attempts to perform yoga but somehow desists and does not succeed. It is something like a student who does not get his degree because he drops out of school. Elsewhere in the Gita, Sri Krsna points out to Arjuna that out of many men, few strive for perfection, and out of those who strive for perfection, only a few succeed. So Arjuna is inquiring after the vast number of failures. Even if a man has faith and strives for perfection in the yoga system, Arjuna points out that he may not attain this perfection due to "worldly-mindedness."

kaccin nobhaya-vibhrastas
chinnabhram iva nasyati
apratistho maha-baho
vimudho brahmanah pathi

"O mighty-armed Krsna," Arjuna continues, "does not such a man, being deviated from the path of Transcendence, perish like a riven cloud, with no position in any sphere?" (Bg. 6.38) When a cloud is torn apart by the wind, it does not mend back together again.

etan me samsayam krsna
chettum arhasy asesatah
tvad-anyah samsayasyasya
chetta na hy upapadyate

"This is my doubt, O Krsna, and I ask You to dispel it completely. But for Yourself, no one is to be found who can destroy this doubt." (Bg. 6.39) Arjuna is asking this question about the fate of the unsuccessful yogi so that in the future people would not be discouraged. By a yogi, Arjuna is referring to the hatha-yogi, jnana-yogi and bhakti-yogi; it is not that meditation is the only form of yoga. The meditator, the philosopher and the devotee are all to be considered yogis. Arjuna is questioning for all those who are attempting to become successful transcendentalists. And how does Sri Krsna answer him?

sri-bhagavan uvaca
partha naiveha namutra
vinasas tasya vidyate
na hi kalyana-krt kascid
durgatim tata gacchati

Here, as in many other places throughout the Gita, Sri Krsna is referred to as Bhagavan. This is another of the Lords innumerable names. Bhagavan indicates that Krsna is the proprietor of six opulences: He possesses all beauty, all wealth, all power, all fame, all knowledge and all renunciation. Living entities partake of these opulences in finite degrees. One may be famous in a family, in a town, in a country or on one planet, but no one is famous throughout the creation, as is Sri Krsna. The leaders of the world may be famous for a few years only, but Lord Sri Krsna appeared five thousand years ago and is still being worshiped. So one who possesses all six of these opulences in completeness is considered to be God. In Bhagavad-gita Krsna speaks to Arjuna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and as such it is to be understood that He has complete knowledge. Bhagavad-gita was imparted to the sun-god and to Arjuna by Krsna, but nowhere is it mentioned that Bhagavad-gita was imparted to Krsna. Why? Complete knowledge means that He knows everything that is to be known. This is an attribute of God alone. Being that Krsna knows everything, Arjuna is putting this question to Him about the fate of the unsuccessful yogi. There is no possibility for Arjuna to research the truth. He simply has to receive the truth from the complete source, and this is the system of disciplic succession. Krsna is complete, and the knowledge that comes from Krsna is also complete. If Arjuna receives this complete knowledge and we receive it from Arjuna as it was spoken to him, then we also receive complete knowledge. And what is this knowledge? "The Blessed Lord said: Son of Prtha, a transcendentalist engaged in auspicious activities does not meet with destruction either in this world or in the spiritual world; one who does good, My friend, is never overcome by evil." (Bg. 6.40) Here Krsna indicates that the very striving for yoga perfection is a most auspicious attempt. When one attempts something so auspicious, he is never degraded.

Actually Arjuna is asking a very appropriate and intelligent question. It is not unusual for one to fall down from the platform of devotional service. Sometimes a neophyte devotee does not keep the rules and regulations. Sometimes he yields to intoxication or is trapped by some feminine attractions. These are impediments on the path of yoga perfection. But Sri Krsna gives an encouraging answer, for He tells Arjuna that even if one sincerely cultivates only one-percent worth of spiritual knowledge, he will never fall down into the material whirlpool. That is due to the sincerity of his effort. It should always be understood that we are weak and that the material energy is very strong. To adopt spiritual life is more or less to declare war against the material energy. The material energy is trying to entrap the conditioned soul as much as possible, and when the conditioned soul tries to get out of her clutches by spiritual advancement of knowledge, material nature becomes more stringent and vigorous in her efforts to test how much the aspiring spiritualist is sincere. The material energy, or maya, will then offer more allurements.

In this regard, there is the story of Visvamitra Muni, a great king, a ksatriya, who renounced his kingdom and took to the yoga process in order to become more spiritually advanced. At that time the meditational yoga process was possible to execute. Visvamitra Muni meditated so intently that Indra, the King of heaven, noticed him and thought, This man is trying to occupy my post." The heavenly planets are also material, and there is competitionno businessman wants another businessman to exceed him. fearing that Visvamitra Muni would actually depose him, Indra sent one heavenly society girl, named Menaka, to allure him sexually. Menaka was naturally very beautiful, and she was intent on disrupting the munis meditations. Indeed, he became aware of her feminine presence upon hearing the sound of her bangles, and he immediately looked up from his meditation, saw her, and became captivated by her beauty. As a result, the beautiful girl Sakuntala was born by their conjugation. When Sakuntala was born, Visvamitra lamented: "Oh, I was just trying to cultivate spiritual knowledge, and again I have been entrapped." He was about to flee when Menaka brought his beautiful daughter before him and chastised him. Despite her pleading, Visvamitra resolved to leave anyway.

Thus there is every chance of failure on the yogic path; even a great sage like Visvamitra Muni can fall down due to material allurement. Although the muni fell for the time being, he again resolved to go on with the yoga process, and this should be our resolve. Krsna informs us that such failures should not be cause for despair. There is the famous proverb that "failure is the pillar of success." In the spiritual life especially, failure is not discouraging. Krsna very clearly states that even if there is failure, there is no loss either in this world or in the next. One who takes to this auspicious line of spiritual culture is never completely vanquished.

Now what actually happens to the unsuccessful spiritualist? Sri Krsna specifically explains,

prapya punya-krtam lokan
usitva sasvatih samah
sucinam srimatam gehe
yoga-bhrasto bhijayate
[Bg. 6.41]

athava yoginam eva
kule bhavati dhimatam
etad dhi durlabhataram
loke janma yad idrsam
[Bg. 6.42]

"The unsuccessful yogi, after many, many years of enjoyment on the planets of the pious living entities, is born into a family of righteous people, or into a family of rich aristocracy. Or he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Verily, such a birth is rare in this world." (Bg. 6.4142) There are many planets in the universe, and on the higher planets there are greater comforts, the duration of life is longer, and the inhabitants are more religious and godly. Since it is said that six months on earth is equal to one day on the higher planets, the unsuccessful yogi stays on these higher planets for many, many years. Vedic literatures describe their lifetimes as lasting ten thousand years. So even if one is a failure, he is promoted to these higher planets. But one cannot remain there perpetually. When the fruits or the results of ones pious activities expire, he has to return to earth. Yet even upon returning to this planet, the unsuccessful yogi meets with fortunate circumstances, for he takes his birth in either a very rich family or a pious one.
Generally, according to the law of karma, if one enacts pious deeds, he is rewarded in the next life by birth into a very aristocratic family or into a very wealthy family, or he becomes a great scholar, or he is born very beautiful. In any case, those who sincerely begin spiritual life are guaranteed human birth in the next lifenot only human birth, but birth into either a very pious or a very wealthy family. Thus one with such a good birth should understand that his fortune is due to his previous pious activities and to Gods grace. These facilities are given by the Lord, who is always willing to give us the means to attain Him. Krsna simply wants to see that we are sincere. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is stated that every particular person has his own duty in life, regardless of his position and regardless of his society. If, however, he gives up his prescribed duty and somehoweither out of sentiment or association or craziness or whatevertakes shelter of Krsna, and if, due to his immaturity, he falls from the devotional path, still there is no loss for him. On the other hand, if a person executes his duties perfectly but does not approach God, then what does he earn? His life is indeed without benefit. But a person who has approached Krsna is better situated, even though he may fall down from the yogic platform.

Krsna further indicates that of all good families to be born intofamilies of successful merchants or philosophers or meditatorsthe best is the family of yogis. One who takes birth in a very rich family may be misled. It is normal for a man who is given great riches to try to enjoy those riches; thus rich mens sons often become drunkards or prostitute hunters. Similarly, one who takes birth in a pious family or in a brahminical family often becomes very puffed up and proud, thinking, "I am a brahmana; I am a pious man." There is chance of degradation in both rich and pious families, but one who takes birth in a family of yogis or of devotees has a much better chance of cultivating again that spiritual life from which he has fallen. Krsna tells Arjuna,

tatra tam buddhi-samyogam
labhate paurva-dehikam
yatate ca tato bhuyah
samsiddhau kuru-nandana

"On taking such a birth, he again revives the divine consciousness of his previous life, and he tries to make further progress in order to achieve complete success, O son of Kuru." (Bg. 6.43)

Being born in a family of those who execute yoga or devotional service, one remembers his spiritual activities executed in his previous life. Anyone who takes to Krsna consciousness seriously is not an ordinary person; he must have taken to the same process in his previous life. Why is this?

purvabhyasena tenaiva
hriyate hy avaso pi sah

"By virtue of the divine consciousness of his previous life, he automatically becomes attracted to the yogic principleseven without seeking them." (Bg. 6.44) In the material world, we have experience that we do not carry our assets from one life to another. I may have millions of dollars in the bank, but as soon as my body is finished, my bank balance is also. At death, the bank balance does not go with me; it remains in the bank to be enjoyed by somebody else. This is not the case with spiritual culture. Even if one enacts a very small amount on the spiritual platform, he takes that with him to his next life, and he picks up again from that point.

When one picks up this knowledge that was interrupted, he should know that he should now finish the balance and complete the yogic process. One should not take the chance of finishing up the process in another birth but should resolve to finish it in this life. We should be determined in this way: "Somehow or other in my last life, I did not finish my spiritual cultivation. Now Krsna has given me another opportunity, so let me finish it up in this life." Thus after leaving this body one will not again take birth in this material world, where birth, old age, disease and death are omnipresent, but will return to Krsna. One who takes shelter under the lotus feet of Krsna sees this material world simply as a place of danger. for one who takes to spiritual culture, this material world is actually unfit. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati used to say, "This place is not fit for a gentleman." Once one has approached Krsna and has attempted to make spiritual progress, Krsna, who is situated within the heart, begins to give directions. In the Gita, Sri Krsna says that for one who wants to remember Him, He gives remembrance, and for one who wants to forget Him, He allows him to forget.

-----------------------

The holy Names of Lord Nityananda and Gauranga have brought a great difference in this specific Kali Yuga because They are all-merciful. Lord Nityananda is the savior Who without considering our offences brings us to the feet of Lord Gauranga Who will accept us on Lord Nityanandas behalf. And Lord Gauranga brings us to the feet of Radha Krishna Who will accept us on behalf of Lord Gauranga. So yes there is a great difference since there is in this Kali Yuga a unique sequence to reach the holy feet of Sri Sri Radha Gopijana-vallabha: the chanting of the Mantrarajas Nityananda and Gauranga along with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

-----------------------

Initiation means a direct connection to the whole line of acharyas of the Gaudiya Vaisnava Sampradaya all he way back to the Source of all sources: Sri Gauranga Krishna. Maybe from a rational point of view there is no difference but from the direct experience point of view there is a world of difference. In my case the experience of the holy Names became an indescribable deep connected experience after I took initiation of Gurudeva. Also initiation makes you more seriousness about the vows you take. When you take a vow just by yourself, or when you take a vow in front of your guru, the guru parampara and the Lord Himself, that is a way different feeling of responsibility. Maybe you can be unfaithful to yourself, but initiation builds a huge barrier to become unfaithful to the Guru or the Lord Himself. Again that is direct experience speaking and not so much theoretical consideration.

-----------------------

The Gayatri Mantras follow the same natural sequence of shelter at Lord Nityanandas feet, Lord Gaurangas feet and Sri Sri Radha Krishnas feet. Our eternal svarupa will be naturally revealed as we mature in our spiritual development. In whatever rasa we are, in the spiritual world all rasas serve the madhura rasa or in other words the awareness of madhura rasa is there in all rasas.

-----------------------

Along with the Vaisnava-mantras Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati reinstated the Brahma-Gayatri and upavita (the sacred tread) mainly to show that a Vaisnava is above the castes and can perform all the rituals normally performed only by Brahmanas. For your information: the Brahma-gayatri is Vedic, the Krishna mantras are mentioned in Caitanya-caritamrita and Brahma-samhita. The Gaura-mantras are mentioned in the Isana-samhita and the Guru- and Gaura-gayatries were introduced by Jahnava Devi, Lord Nityanandas wife.

-----------------------

Please Srinath dont feel by any means afraid to make mistakes in this forum. Your intentions are devotional and in the service of the Vaisnavas and the Lord. Your contributions are highly appreciated and even when you would by accident make an offence, just know you will be forgiven and we will encourage you to stand up and to move on.

I dare not compare myself with Shrila Mukunda, but yes, I use my Christian background to cultivate my bhakti. Essentially, Christianity is not that different from the teachings of Lord Gauranga. True, the outer form is different. E.g. Benedictine monks value silence a lot. But they pray practically the whole day, which makes them Laksheshvara as well...

Here’s a poem (in Latin) for You, Swamiji

Omnen horam occupabis
Hymnis, psalmis, et amabis
Tenere silentium.
Super hoc orationem
Diliges et lectionem,
Nutricem claustralium.

Chant every hour of the day
Your hymns, psalms en love
to keep the silence.
Above all, love to pray
And read spiritual works,
This is the necessary monastic food.
