Chanting of other songs and mantras

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna!

Dandavats. Jaya Sri Guru Parampara!

In the Ananta Samhita we find the following statements:

varjayitva tu namaitad, durjanaih parikalpitam;
chandobaddham susiddhanta, viruddham nabhyaset padam.

One should never neglect or give up the chanting of this maha-mantra and take to other so-called purificatory processes which are invented by fools and miscreants. One should not engage even in chanting other metrical compostions of the names of God that are against the pure conclusions of the scriptures.

utshrjyaitan-maha-mantram, ye tvanyat kalpitam padam;
mahanameti gayanti, te sastra-guru langhanah.

Abandoning this maha-mantra, those who recite verses or poems or songs which have been manufactured through someones imagination, transgress the instructions of the scriptures and the bona-fide spiritual masters, even though the verses they are reciting may be full of the principal names of Lord Krishna.

tattva-virodha-sanpriktam, tadrisam daurjanam matam;
sarvatha pariharyam syadatma-hitarthina sada.

Those who are interested in their real self-interest, should never accept in any form whatsoever, these concocted mantras or verses which are against the philosophical conclusions of the scriptures and may contain subtle deviations from the Vedic knowledge.

hare krishna hare krishna, krishna krishna hare hare;
hare rama hare rama, rama rama hare hare.

Thus everyone should take full shelter and chant with great sincerity:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare;
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What about songs, containing principle names of the Lord that Ive heard devotees singing in kirtana which are different from the maha-mantra but are considered as bonafide?

To name a few:

1. Hari Haraye Nama Krishna Yadavaya Namah
Gopala Govinda Rama Shri Madhusudhana

2. Jaya Radha Madhava Kunja Bihari
Gopijana Vallabha Girivaradhari
Yashoda nandana braja jana ranjana
Yamuna tira vana cari

3. Govinda Jaya Jaya Gopala Jaya Jaya
Radha Ramana Hari Govinda Jaya Jaya

4. Radhe Radhe Govinda Govinda Radhe

5. Shri Krishna Govinda Hare Murare
He Natha Narayana Vasudeva
(sung by Draupadi)

6. Vande Krishna Nanda Kumara
Nanda Kumara Madana Gopala
Madana Gopala Mohana Rupa
Jaya Jayadeva Hare

7. Jay Jay Radhe Jay Jay Shyam
Jay Jay Jay Vrindavan Dham

8. Radhe Radhe Radhe Jaya Jay Shri Radhe
Radharani ki jaya! Maharani ki jaya!

etc., etc.

Re: Why do we need Guru?

Nityananda ! Gauranga ! Hare Krishna !

I have always had the desire to have a guru. However I feel very guilty to get initiated. It is said that while initiation the spiritual master accepts all our sins on Him. This is one the reasons why I don't want to get initiated as I don't want such a great representative of Lord Gaura Krishna to take my sins on Him. What you think, am I thinking correctly or I should surrender to guru ?

Sincerely,
Mihir.

14 Points of Daily Sadhana

By Jahnava Nitai das

The following are a collection of practical teachings from the instructions of Sri A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada that will help us to develop our spiritual potential. Sadhana must be performed regularly without faltering. Just as we daily take our food, sleep, bathe and so on without fail, so in the same way we should without fail daily practice our spiritual sadhana to purify ourselves and advance in spiritual life. We should check our progress everyday by asking ourselves if today we have improved ourselves and come closer to God.
1. Rise early, this will keep us in the mode of goodness (sattva guna) which is conducive for spiritual advancement. Early morning, one hour and thirty minutes before sunrise is the auspicious time known as Brahma Muhurta. At this time our mind will be very focused and fit for spiritual practices, thereby multiplying the effect of the sadhana.
2. Daily chant the names of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama on a japa mala (sacred rosary made of tulasi wood). In the present age of quarrel (kali yuga), there is no method to attain spiritual realization as effective as by chanting the holy names of the Lord.
3. Observe a proper spiritual diet by taking only Sattvic foods. Eat simply and avoid meat, fish, eggs, onion and garlic as these foods increase our lower tendencies and result in bad karma. Offer all food to Lord Krishna before eating and partake the remnants as prasadam. Eat in moderation and do not let your tongue and belly control your mind. People taking a non-vegetaraian diet should try their best to gradually give up flesh-eating as completely as possible. They will be immensely benefited.
4. Study the sacred Vedic literatures very systematically and reverently, especially the Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam and Ramayana. Spend at least one hour reading these holy texts each day, and discuss them with other devotees whenever possible. There is no difference between Lord Krishna and Lord Krishna's instructions. By reading the Bhagavad Gita and hearing Sri Krishna's upadesha we are directly associating with the Supreme Lord.
5. Have a seperate puja room where you keep deities of Lord Krishna and Radha, or other forms of the Lord. If its not possible to have a seperate room, then at least keep one corner of the room seperated with a cloth screen for the altar of the Lord. Daily offer worship to the deities in the morning and evening with incense, flowers, water, camphor, deepam and with what ever else is within your capacity. Before taking your meals first present the food in front of the Lord for Him to accept.
6. Observe brahmacharya in thought and deed to preserve the vital forces (virya, prana, etc.) Virya is the essence of life, thought and intelligence. Householders should also follow this as far as possible. They must be extremely moderate in their marital connections with their spouse. By austerity and brahmacharya our spiritual intelligence will develop very rapidly.
7. Every day offer some form of charity to those in need. This includes giving in charity to needy people as well as feeding other living entities such as dogs, cows and insects. Do not take your meals without first having offered something to another living entity. Do not limit your charity to food and money. Giving spiritual knowledge is the highest form of charity, so also engage in spreading Lord Krishna's instructions of the Gita to other interested people. On marriages, birthdays and other festivals distribute copies of the Bhagavad Gita instead of giving mundane gifts.
8. Associate with like minded devotees and develop their godly qualities. This is known as sat-sanga or sadhu-sanga. Sat sanga is coming directly in contact with the Lord through His devotees. By always keeping good association and avoiding bad association we will quickly begin to reflect the divine qualities of the Lord. Give up bad habits such as smoking and drinking, and instead replace them with the good habits of service. Service to God in the company of devotees is the quickest method to advance in spiritual life.
9. Voluntarily observe a fast on ekadashi days (11th day after the full moon and new moon) by eating only fruits, vegetables and milk while avoiding grains and beans. This day is very dear to Lord Krishna and should be used for meditating on His pastimes and transcendental activities. Increase your sadhana on these days while decreasing your mundane activities. At least two days in the month can be fully dedicated to God and spiritual practice.
10. Carry a small japa mala (sacred rosary made from Tulasi wood) with you wherever you go so that you can be reminded of the Lord as much as possible. In your free time roll the beads with your fingers and chant the names of Krishna around the mala. Even when performing work or activities at least mentally try to chant the names of the Lord. This will keep you always Krishna conscious and situated above the modes of material nature.
11. Learn to discipline your speech by speaking truth at all times, always offer encouraging words to others, and by observing silence when no necessary talk is required. Never engage in gossip or criticize people. Try not to discourage people, and never raise your voice to others out of pride or anger.
12. Reduce your wants and learn to be content with less than the mind demands. Contentment is an internal treasure, it is not attained by acquiring external objects. Do not let the mind fool you into chasing material possessions. One cannot extinguish a fire by pouring fuel on top of it. Trying to satisfy our material desires will only increase the fire of material suffering. Learn to extinguish this fire by removing the fuel of material sense gratification. Only through simple living and high thinking can we attain contentment in spiritual life.
13. Practice ahimsa by never harming other living entities. Show compassion to others including the lower life forms such as animals and insects. Compassion, forgiveness, kindness and love can conquer our internal enemies of anger, greed and lust.
14. Always think of Lord Krishna, as this is the essence of all scriptural injunctions. When you wake up in the morning, remember Lord Krishna and offer obeisances to Him before rising from bed. In the night offer your obeisances to Him before sleeping. Throughout the day always chant His name and keep His thought in your mind. By so doing we can remain free from material contamination. This material world is like an ocean of darkness, but by remembering the Lord we can be like the lotus leaf which always remains dry above the water level despite being situated within the water.

i would like to share with You a conversation between Shrila B.R. Shri

I would like to share with You a conversation between Shrila B.R. Shridhara Swami and a devotee regarding the chanting of Gaura Naam.

Shrila B.R. Shridhara Swami: Gaura Haribol, Gaura Haribol, Gaura Haribol...

Devotee: Lord Nityananda Prabhu recommended that we chant Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga as the proper internal ... (inaudible)

Shrila B.R. Shridhara Swami: If we have faith in that we will be more gainer then taking Krishna Naam, because there is the consideration called offenses - Krishna Naam kare aparadhera vicara, and less offense in Gaura Naam. But faith in Gauranga that is rare. To have faith in Gauranga, that is costly. But if you anyhow can gather that, then it will be more beneficial than you negotiate direct with Krishna. Direct negotiate... The offense is more possible that side and less offense here. More forgiveness. But Krishna Naam has got some universal characteristics accepted by majority of persons and Gaura Naam is not accepted in such a wider circle. So it is difficult to put faith there. But if one can have his faith, then he will be gainer, because less consideration of aparadha, offense. He has particularily come for the fallen souls. So grace is more there. But to put faith in Him that will be ...(inaudible) difficult. Until we can understand Him ontologically we cannot go by the help of our experience. Not accepted by greater circle as Krishna is accepted. So many higher scriptures are also in favor of Krishna avatara, then the wide circle they accept Krishna as Lord, but minor circle accept Gauranga as God and there are not so many scriptures supporting Him. So it is difficult to have faith in Him. But if anyhow one can come nearer, He will be more gainer.

Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga, ...

Gaura Naam for perfected as well as conditioned

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

The unparalleled magnanimity of Lord Gauranga and His Holy Name can be conceived in two ways. In terms of perfectional stage, He and His Name are willing and desiring to grant one the topmost achievement of all the desires on the path of bhakti yoga, including the eternal and most intimate service at the Lotus Feet of Shrimati Radharani and Her Closest Associates, along with the eternal service to Lord Gauranga Himself (as Gauranga=Radha-Krishna, Gaura Lila = Krishna Lila). As long as one is attached to and drinks the nectar of Lord Gauranga's Lotus Feet and Holy Name, one is being given place at Shrimati Radharani's Lotus Feet (Shria Prabhudananda Saraswati, Shri Chaitanya Chandramrita). That is why the eternal perfect associates of Lord Gauranga, like Shrila Haridasa Thakura or Shrila Narahari Sarkara, desire to spend last moments of their manifest pastimes in chanting Lord Gauranga's Name in order to teach us how to obtain all our cherished fruits of our Naam bhajan and also to relish Themselves these fruits which are given to Them by the final absorption into Gauranga Naam, Rupa, Guna and Lila (which automatically and simultaneously reveal also the whole Radha-Krishna Tattva).

"Haridasa Thakura began chanting, Shri Krishna Chaitanya, again and again, and while drinking the sweetness of the Lords moon-like face, tears constantly glided down from his eyes. It was while chanting the holy name, Shri Krishna Chaitanya, that Haridasa Thakura gave up his air of life and left his material body." (Chaitanya Charitamrita)

gaura vihane, na vachi parne, gaura karechi sra
gaura baliya, jauka jvane, kichu n chiba ra

"Without Gaura I cannot live. Gaura is my everything. I pray to give up my life taking the name of Gaura I ask for nothing else." (Shrila Narahari Sarkara, Mana Re Kaha Na Gaura Katha)

In term of conditioned stage, Lord Gauranga and His Holy Name along with Lord Nityananda and His Holy Name are ready to offer shelter to the most fallen and degraded persons. That is the second aspect of Lords Nityananda Gauranga's unprecedented magnanimity. Although They are offering something which has never been given before and which has been carefully conceiled all the countless years even from great vedic scholars and yogis, They are ready to give it to anyone and everyone, regardless the fallen and conditioned stage of one's existence.

shri chaitanya avatare bada vilakshana
aparaadha-sattve jiva labhe prema-dhana.. (Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, Ch.1 Verse 51)

"The incarnation of Lord Gauranga is exceptionally opulent, powerful and influential among all forms of God. Even though Lord Krishna's Name considers offenses and does not give love to an offensive soul, Lord Gauranga's Name, Pastimes and Abodes do not consider offenses and award pure love of God to even the offensive souls. This unprecedented and unimaginable munificence of Lord Gauranga's incarnation is the only life-saving hope for the conditioned souls of Kali Yuga."

aparaadha baadhaa tara kichu naahi kare
niramala krishna-preme taara ankhi jhare..53

"Even the formidable obstacles posed due to the offenses in one's heart are rendered ineffective by the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga and the eyes miraculously flow with the sublime tears of pristinely pure love for Lord Krishna when one chants the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga even though offenses are present in the heart."

Lord Nitaai-Gauranga and His Holy Name is the beginning as well as the end. Lord Gauranga covers the all spectrum, as He is the Original, Complete and Most Merciful Supreme Lord. Thus it is a very great gift the Holy Names of Nityananda and Gauranga, and our wholehearted expressions of gratitude shall be repeatedly offered to all the devotees of the Lord, who were, are and will be revealing and distributing this rarest gift of Nityananda Gauranga Naam to all the most needy and desperate souls as myself.

Yours insignificant,
Matus

One day i saw a sadhu...

Chapter 1 of Jaiva Dharma:

One day I saw a Vaishnava sadhu loudly singing about the pastimes of Sri Hari. I opened my eyes and saw that he was bathed in streams of tears, and in his ecstatic rapture the hairs of his body
were standing on end. He was chanting the names Sri Krsna Caitanya, Prabhu Nityananda! in a choked-up voice, and as he danced, his feet slipped so that he fell on the ground again and again. When I saw him and heard his song, my heart filled with an indescribable ecstasy."

Re: Greatest Vaishnava

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

Dear Swami Gaurangapada,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

This is really wonderful writing. I have queries from point 4 and point 8 and would like to request you to guide me with the same.

In point 4 it is said that  if a person knows that Lord Shiva is a vaishnav then it is ok if he worships Lord Shiva by chanting Om Namah Shivaya instead of worshiping Lord Krishna. Can you pls guide me whether this is true ?

In point 8 it is said that food offered to Lord Shiva is mahaprasadam where as food offered to Lord Krishna is only prasadam. Does that mean that we should also take food offered to Lord Shiva as it is greater than food offered to Lord Krishna ?

Thanking you in advance.

Nityanada! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!
