Re: how to defeat the Atheist

Some of Srila Prabhupada quotes about atheists

And those who are dvishat, atheist, upeksha, don't go there, save yourself.

the last quote  I like is one from Hari Sauri das transcendental diary

We may, however, defy the existence of God. Atheist class of men, demons, they always defy, "Who is God? I am God." But everyone is under the control of time factor. The time factor, in due course, will bring him death. So at that time, how one can deny the existence of God? Mrityuh sarva-haras caham [Bg. 10.34]. Krishna says that "I am death, and My business is to take away everything." Mrityuh sarva-haras caham. So time factor will take away everything, what we create with these twenty-four elements. So time is very strong, kala. However we may defy the existence of God, the time factor is there. We have to accept it. And it is said, kalam eke yato bhayam. And because we are under the control of the time at the present moment in material existence, therefore there is bhayam. Bhayam means ultimately death. Bhayam. Bhayam dvitiyabhinivesatah syad isad apetasya viparyayo 'smritih.
The description of bhayam is given in the Bhagavatam. What is this bhayam, fearfulness? Bhayam, isad apetasya viparyayo 'smritih: "Those who have forgotten the Supreme Lord and have identified themselves with this material world, for them, the fearfulness is there."

Prabhupada requested Svarupa Damodara prabhu, who is here with other members of the newly formed Bhaktivedanta InstituteSadaputa and Madhava prabhusto speak a few words about the scientific view of the Absolute before he himself lectured.
A short, round-faced brahmacari from Manipur, India, with a doctorate in biology, Svarupa Damodara told his attentive audience that science accepts certain axioms [propositions assumed without proof for the sake of studying their consequences] in physics, chemistry and mathematics. From these, scientists produce their theories. Similarly, he explained that our Krishna conscious scientists say the basic prerequisite to understand the difference between life and matter is to have some understanding of the Absolute Truth. By accepting the axiom of the Absolute Truth as the source of everything, the basic meaning of God and the difference between life and matter can be realized.
Srila Prabhupada was satisfied with his statement, and in his own short speech he stressed that the Absolute Truth cannot be understood by mental speculation. Quoting the Brahma-samhita, he told us that even if we travel at the speed of the mind for millions of years, we still will not be able to understand the Absolute Truth. The specific nature of the Absolute Truth is that it can only be understood by the grace of the Absolute Truth itself which is revealed to us in the Vedas and by the acaryas. "The expansion of the Absolute Truth how it is working, Krishna summarized before Arjuna. This material world, we see only one universe to our vision. Similarly, there are millions of universes and in each universe there are millions of planets, and each planet is different from here. That is God's creation. So all this together, ekamsena sthito jagat, this material world is one-fourth part exhibition of God's creation. And three-fourths' part is in the Vaikunthaloka, spiritual world. So by speculation, by our research, it is impossible, but we can get a glimpse of knowledge of the Absolute Truth when we receive it through the Absolute Truth, Krishna. That is Krishna consciousness movement. Thank you very
much."

One of the women said that people who are convinced that they already have a revelation or experience that is assuring them of eternal life, are not very open to hear.
Again, Srila Prabhupada was practical. "If they are not open to hear about Krishna, then don't waste your time. When in the lower stage of devotional service, he cannot become preacher. When he's in a little upper, second stage, he can become preacher. So preacher has to see four things. First of all God, isvara, and tad-adhina, and those who are devotees. God, His devotees and balisa, innocent. He does not know anything. So three, God, devotee and the innocent. And dvishat, envious, atheist class. He has to see four things, and he has to deal with four persons differently. With God, isvare prema, how to advance my love for God, these dealings. Prema maitri, and to the devotees, we have to make friendship with them. And to the innocent, we have to preach, kripa. 'Oh, here is an innocent person, he does not know, he's eager to learn.' There teaching is required. Teaching, you cannot teach God or you cannot teach God's devotees. But you can teach the innocent. And those who are dvishat, atheist, upeksha, don't go there, save yourself. These are the four things.
"So when one is not open to hear, then don't bother yourself. That requires very strong preacher to convince the atheist class, provided he is reasonable also. If he's stubborn, obstinate, then it is also very difficult. But preaching is meant, innocent, that one who is actually sincere but he does not know what is God,

Hamsaduta's letter contained news of a debate he was having with a famous atheist in Colombo, a Dr. Kovoor. As soon as Tamala Krishna began to read the letter, however, Prabhupada asked to hear Dr. Kovoor's response. Tamala Krishna then began reading from a news clipping enclosed in the letter.
"Das and Swami asked whether scientists can make a chicken to come out of a plastic egg," Tamala Krishna read. "I do not know whether they are aware that scientists have made over ten elements, such as fermium, plutonium, einsteinium-"
Prabhupada interrupted, "Rascal. You are simply producing empty sound. Where is the chicken, rascal? The chicken, the hen, is better than the scientist. She has produced another egg within a week. You simply say this and that, this and that, this and that, that's all. What is your value? We don't give you any value. You are less important than the chicken."
Tamala Krishna resumed reading: "We have created over ten elements that even God-"
Again Prabhupada interrupted. "Who cares for your creation? Without your creation the egg is there."
"No, he says," Tamala Krishna went back to reading the text, "even God could not create them, because He did not know the technology involved in making them."
"God kicks on your mouth," said Prabhupada. "He doesn't require to take your creation. Without your creation He can do everything. God kicks on your mouth with shoes. Talkative nonsense. Tell him like that."
"I'm sure Hamsaduta did," said Tamala Krishna. "Next we'll read his reply. Anyway, the scientist goes on, "Are these two men aware of the success of the Sri Lanka scientist Dr-' "
Prabhupada: "Who cares of his scientists?"
""The Nobel Prize-winner in synthesizing amino acids-'"
"Nobel Prize-winner," scoffed Srila Prabhupada. "Another rascal has given him a Nobel Prize. He is a rascal, and another rascal has given. Suri-sakshi matta. In a liquor house the witness is a drunkard. If there is an incident within the liquor shop and the proprietor of the liquor shop has brought some witnesses, but all of them are drunkards-what is the value of that? As soon as you are drunkard, immediately you are rejected."
Tamala Krishna read on, and Prabhupada continued to interrupt him at almost every sentence. The devotees had not seen Prabhupada so fiery in weeks. When Tamala Krishna read Hamsaduta's reply, Prabhupada was pleased to see how many of the same points his disciple had made. "He is putting very strong arguments," said Prabhupada. "This is preaching!"

Hari Sauri das elder brother, Brian, studied marine biology at Bangor University. He was a typical skeptic scientist and we had a friendly debate as we walked the grounds. He was a tough nut, unwilling to suspend his absolute trust in his own mind and senses in order to venture into the higher realm of revelation and surrender to God. At one point I explained that God, Krishna, was an objective reality, regardless of whether we understand Him or not. He told me that as far as he was concerned, it was all just a question of what you believe. "If you believe there is a God, fine. If you don't believe there is a God, fine."
He was stumped when I told him, "Its not a question of belief. It is a fact. You might not believe that someone on the other side of the world in Russia is making an atom bomb, and you can go on living in your own little world. But if he drops it on your head then what is the value of your belief? You'll be forced to accept, like it or not."
At another point he rapped his knuckles on the wooden staircase bannister and told me, "Look, I believe in whatever you can touch, or see, or smell, or perceive with your senses. That is real. There's nothing beyond that."
Again I easily defeated his argument with some commonsense logic learned from Srila Prabhupada. "Do I have a mind?" I asked him. "You can't see it, you can't touch it, you can't smell it, you can't hear it and you can't taste it. But you know I have a mind, and so you do too. There are many things beyond your senses and to know about them you have to hear from an authority. You will never understand them with your limited faculties."

Posting tips for better service

Dear prabhu and all devotees,

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! My pranams! You could try these : 1) Use the preview button to see how your post will look like when it is uploaded, then you can scroll down and make corrections when necessary

2) You could also first type in notepad or any other text editor and check it out before pasting it here. I would suggest using Microsoft Word as it can help you edit as you type and correct all the grammar, spelling and make it good.

3) The simple editor has its own inbuilt dictionary.

4) Or if you have any trouble, you could always send me your post to my email. Or any other devotee who is willing I could do the editing in my spare time. We are ready to help anyone facing difficulties in their forum services, if you have any. This may not be entirely practical as we all have enough engagements to not have time to edit our own articles already, but it's worth a try.

I personally end up making a first draft, editing, then re-editing, then making some other adjustments and corrections, often replacing some content entirely before I come up with one proper post. Sometimes in reading very long articles which we see on the internet, we may not have enough time to go through it all because of our work and other commitments and we may end up just seeing the starting lines and posting them. However the web is not always reliable and a closer look will show many things wrong, which later causes shock and embarrassment to everyone for no fault of ours. Neither you nor I nor anyone else has any intention to put up anything wrong on the forum and we only desire to serve each other.

But inspite of all efforts and good intentions, still something bad creeps in and then we feel sad. Please do not feel sad about any mistakes. This happened to me. I have written posts and I made tons of errors, often posting up something that caused trouble. Now I am more careful. This happened even to other Vaisnavas. There was this article on Vamsidasa Babaji sometime back that claimed he was Gauranga nagari or something. Since it came at the end, no one noticed it until later and then when we it was removed. The source of the article was also a well known devotee, but only after reading it a few times the error was noticed. The same thing was true for the BBT. Intially they made many editing fumbles in publishing Prabhupada's books as they had to put the tape recordings into paper without knowledge of Sanskirt or Bengali and in the case of Chaitanya Charitamrta they had to get 11 volumes ready in just 4 months, often working without sleep. Now to properly go through everything page by page and proof read it and correct everything is something that has been going on for 30 years because of the sheer amount of Prabhupada's writings. It happens.....

A few tips before posting : 1) If we see something on the web that looks good, we must spend sometime going through the article before we put it up here. Never mind if it takes a few days, but do not hurry. First thing is to understand an article or a post properly before putting it up, or else we may not understand why others are responding negatively.

     2) Please preview your posts before putting them up, that way you'll know how it looks like. This may considerably increase your writing time, so please do it offline before coming up here. Some of my own writings have taken 4-5 hours of work before putting them up, even then there are problems.

     3) In making audio or video posts a good idea would be to write down what we want to say with a few hints here and there and refer to that while recording. Not everyone is a born speaker. I am a terrible speaker for one thing and I had to learn this point in my first attempt at making a video. I ended up reading the prayers as I kept forgetting the lines.

Hope that helps,
Your servant,
Srinath

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna!

We are not Vegetarians: Srila Prabhupada said

We are not Vegetarians: Srila Prabhupada said "Were Krsnatarians. Rabbits are vegetarian,
Srila Prabhupada writes, Extravagance in the matter of eating, sleeping, defending, and matingwhich are demands of the bodycan block advancement in the practice of yoga. As far as eating is concerned, it can be regulated only when one is practiced to take and accept prasdam, sanctified food. We eat vegetarian food, but we are not vegetarians. Were Krsnatarians. Rabbits are vegetarian, elephants are vegetarian. So what? Krsna says, If all you can offer is a leaf, flower, or fruit, offer it with love. And take the remnants, the prasdam. What I want is your devotion.
Not only is vegetarian Indian cuisine delectable, but theres just something about Krsna prasdam that is indescribably delicious. I may get distracted by thoughts of illicit sex, intoxication (hardly but maybe), gambling (we speculate sometimes). But meat-eatingforget it. I never even think of it. Because we have literally developed a higher taste for Krsna-prasadam. We regulate our activities by taking Krsna prasadam.
As for sleeping, any unnecessary time spent sleeping is considered a great loss. A devotee uses every moment of the day to pursue his goal. None of us here has any contract that guarantees we have a hundred years to live

Re: Question

dear bhaktatommy please accept my respects.

I love the story of Sri Nityananda Prabhu earring. I tried to find this in all the scriptures I have, but don't find it; can anyone verify it please.

below is from Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat mad 3  Nityananda wore a earring in his left ear

The Lord said to everyone, Today I had a wonderful dream. I saw a beautiful chariot, with a flag on top, that came and stopped near my door. Within that chariot there was a remarkable personality. He carried a large pillar on His shoulder and appeared restless. He had a stick tucked into His clothes and carried a pitcher in His left hand. He dressed in blue garments with a blue cadara on his chest. A wonderful earring hung on His left ear. By His features, I assume He is none other than Haladhara Balarama. He repeatedly asked, Is this the house of Nimai Pandita?
Lord Caitanya continued, I have never seen such a noble and powerful personality. He was effulgent and dressed as an avadhuta, or mendicant. I was severely stunned by seeing Him. I asked Him, Who are you? He smilingly replied, I am Your brother. We will meet and know each other tomorrow. Hearing His words, My happiness increased. I consider Myself as similar to that personality.
Speaking like this, Lord Caitanya fell into ecstatic trance and began to roar loudly in the mood of Haladhara Balarama. The Lord demanded, Bring wine! His loud voice almost shattered the ears of everyone present. Then Srivasa Pandita* said, Please listen, O Gosai! The wine that you are asking for is right here in front of You. Only those You give it to can relish it.

Chanting Lord Nityananda’s name.

All the devotees with shouts of joy welcomed the coming of Lord Nityananda to Navadvipa. Who can describe the unlimited qualities of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, the one who had the potency to break the sannyasa stick of Lord Caitanya? Lord Nityananda is so merciful that anyone who chants His name becomes purified. Even a gross materialist, an ignorant or fallen person, can cross over this ocean of material nescience, if he simply chants Lord Nityanandas name. His Holy Name is capable of purifying the entire material creation. Nandana Acarya Prabhu was more than happy to have Lord Nityananda Prabhu stay in his house, and he looked after Him with great care.
Whoever hears Lord Nityanandas pastimes of coming to Navadvipa will be blessed with krishna-prema. Lord Visvambhara heard of Lord Nityanandas arrival in Navadvipa, and He felt great joy within. Earlier, Lord Caitanya had given indications of Lord Nityanandas arrival to the Vaishnavas, but they could not understand the import. The Lord had told them, A great personality will come to Navadvipa within a few days.
Lord Gauracandra worshiped Lord Vishnu in His temple, and then quickly went to meet all the devotees. He told them, Last night I had a wonderful dream. A chariot came and stood in front of my door. The chariots flag had a palm leaf drawn on it. This chariot was meant to carry one from this temporary material existence to the absolute reality. Within the chariot was a colossal figure, He carried a plough on His large shoulders, He was moving about as if He were restless. In His left hand, He carried a renunciates water pot, which was wrapped over by cane reeds. Both His upper cloth, and lower dress were blue. A beautiful earring pierced His left earlobe. His whole appearance and demeanour indicated that He was Lord Balarama. Upon speaking, He repeated a question at least ten or twenty times saying, Does this house not belong to Nimai Pandita?
Never before have I seen such a formidable looking mendicant. I felt great respect for this person and I asked, I see that You are a great personality. Who are You? Smiling, He replied, I am Your brother. Tomorrow we shall get to know each other. His words increased My delight and I began to feel that He and I were the same person.
In the middle of the narration, the Lord went into an ecstatic trance, and entering into the mood of Lord Balarama, He began to roar and shout loudly, Bring Me wine, bring Me wine. His thundering voice seemed to burst the eardrums. Srivasa Pandita said, Listen dear Lord, the wine that You desire is to be received from only You; therefore, mercifully distribute your wine so that You and all may partake of its ecstasy! The devotees, a little afraid and trembling at seemingly uncontrolled mood of the Lord, stayed at a distance from the Lord, thinking to themselves, Certainly, there must be a great reason for this manifestation.

Re: how to defeat the Atheist

Dear Vaisnavas,

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! Please accept my respectful obeisances!

Please, once before I requested everyone to check their sources, now I request again. Please go through the articles you want to put up, and if you have difficulty in English or other languages, there are always your humble servants on the forum ready to help you out. Actually the forum is very strict and moderates even slightly sharp or blunt posts so that they are not critical, accusative or shocking. Therefore I pray that this article be not tolerated and removed as soon as possible as it is really beyond edition. Bhaktatommy prabhu is correct and he has pointed it out very gently.

Now coming to the topic itself.....

Mundane logic is really useless and dry. Scriptural logic can defeat the atheistic philosophy, but proof of the pudding lies in the eating. Don't we feel pity for those souls who are bewildered and pray for their deliverance? Atheism evolved out of a combination of corrupted and imperfect philosophies in the name of religion and lack of direct experience. The former has caused far more harm than the latter and has done great harm to the devotional nature within the people. All the atheistic people are unaware of genuine religious philosophies. Many of these people have also not known real love and they are frustrated by being repeatedly cheated. Apart from this, others are simply envious. This is an age old problem and it will remain as long as the universe exists.  In the second post in this thread, the best possible reply has been given. Mahaprabhu's sankirtana is the most powerful tool. When the atheists are confronted with nama sankirtana and the spiritual potency of the Vaisnavas, all their logical arguments dry up and simply seeing great devotees can give them sufficient shock. They do not have any direct experience, so we should expose them to sankirtana, to prasadam, to real unconditional love, to real happiness, to perfect siddhanta and we should inspire them that way!!

Servant of your servant,
Srinath

Re: Question

Nityananda! gauranga! Hare Krsna!

Please accept my humble obeisances,

Dear surrendered souls,

(The following is excerpt from a lecture given by H.H. Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja in an issue of Krsnakathamrta whitch may be downloaded in its entirety here:
http://www.gopaljiu.org/Bindu/Back_issues/Bindu121.pdf  )

One day, Nityananda Prabhu and His brother BankaRaya were visiting the village of Mayureswara. They were about to enter a jungle that was situated near that village, but the local villagers warned Them that there was a giant, venomous cobra there and whoever entered never returned, as the cobra would eat them. But Nityananda did not listen to them. He entered the jungle and approached the giant cobra. The snake raised his hood and was hissing, ready to attack, but Nitai was undisturbed. Because He is Ananta Sesa, the cobra obeyed Nityananda Prabhu. Nitai asked the cobra why he was killing innocent humans and animals. The cobra then told his story relating from the Dvarpayuga. The cobra told Nitai that he has been following an order given by Arjuna to stay by the tamala tree. The cobra asked Arjuna how he would survive, and Arjuna said that he could eat whomever happened to come by. Nitai said this behavior was not good and that he should go into a hole by the tamala tree and not come out. But the cobra asked the same question of how he would survive. Nitai told him that peole would come to worship him and offer him great quantities of food. So the cobra agreed and entered into that hole and remained there. Then Nityananda Prabhu took one of His earrings and covered the opening of that hole. The earring gradually increased in size. Now it has turned into a big block of stone and people have built a temple over it. That place is still there and is known as Kundalitala. People still go there today and offer worship to that cobra and offer him much food. From that day forward, Lord Nityananda wore only one colorful earring in his left ear.

Your grateful servant,

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krsna!

Dear Lowerthanrat,

I am not understanding why the preceding post was posted here.  It is dripping with sarcasm and seems to illustrate how not to argue the existence of God.  I am perceiving that this post is actually subtly , if not outright, endorsing atheism.  Please be so kind to explain?

Your servant,
bhaktatommy
