Did God create evil?

Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! In the ultimate sense, God is the final source of everything we see in His spiritual and material creations. But the actual reason why evil exists in this material world is us, the conditioned spirit souls in this material world. We desired evil when we wanted to enjoy separate from God. And God created it to fulfil this desire of ours.

Now one may ask, why did God fulfil this desire of ours if it was evil? He knew it would create tremendous suffering for us. The answer is simple: He knew that unless we experience the suffering and reactions of our original evil desire, we will never desire to go back to Him and become free from all suffering forever. If the prison is more comfortable and free from suffering than the main city, then people will commit crimes to go to the prison. The prison needs to give us the punishment and reactions for our evil desires in order to make us law-abiding citizens again.

Thus, our original desire to enjoy separate from our Father (God) and try to become an imitation God, is the root cause for all the evil in this material world. There is no evil in the spiritual world where all the souls are law-abiding citizens.
