Shri Indra Yaaga Bhanjana Breaking the Fire Sacriifice of Indra

ekadananda-yuktash ca
   nanda-gopo vraje mune
dundubhim vadayam asa
   shakra-yaga-kritodyamah

   shr�-narayana uvaca - Shri Naaraayana Rishi said; ekada - one day; ananda-yuktah - happily; ca - and; nanda-gopo - Nanda-gopa; vraje - in Vraja; mune - O sage; dundubhim - dundubhi drum; vadayam asa - had sounded; shakra-yaga-kritodyamah - about to perform a yajna for the demigod Indra.


   Shri NaaraayaNa Rishi said: One day the gopa Nanda, intending to offer a yajna to the demigod Indra, had a drummer sound a dundubhi drum.

   dadhi - yogurt; ksh�ram - milk; ghritam - ghee; takram - buttermilk; navan�tam - better; guDam - molasses; madhu - honey; etani - they; adaya - taking; shakrasya - of Indra; pujam - worship; kurvantv - should do; iti - thus; bruvan - saying; ye ye - whoever; santi - are; atra - in this; nagare - village; gopa - gopas; gopyah - gopis; ca - and; balakah - boys; balikah - girls; ca - abd; dvija - braahmanas; bhupa - ksatriyas;
vaishyah - vaisyas; shudrah - sudras; ca - and; bhaktitah - with devotion.

   Nanda proclaimed: All the braahmaNas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shUdras in this village must devotedly worship the demigod Indra with offerings of yogurt, milk, ghee, buttermilk, butter, molasses, and honey.

   svayam eva mudanvitah
yashtim aropayam asa
   ramya-sthane su-vistrite

   ity evam - thus; shravayitva - proclaiming; ca - and; svayam - personally; eva - indeed; mudanvitah - happy; yashtim - staff; aropayam asa - lifting; ramya-sthane - in a beautiful place; su-vistrite - broad.


   After saying this, cheerful Nanda placed a great pole in a beautiful and broad place.

candanaguru-kastur�-
   kunkuma-dravam eva ca

   dadau - gave; tatra - there; kshauma-vastram - silken cloth; mala-jalam - flower garlands; manoharam - beautiful; candanaguru-kastur�-kunkuma-dravam - anointed with sandal, aguru, musk, and kunkuma; eva - indeed; ca - and.


   There he erected a beautiful silken tent decorated with flowers and anointed with sandal, aguru, musk, and kunkuma.

   snatah - bathed; kritahniko - performed daily duties; bhaktya - with devotion; dhritva - placing; dhaute - clean; ca - and; vasas� - garments; uvasa - sat; svarNa-p�the - on a golden throne; sa - he; prakshalita - washed padambujah - lotus feet.


   Then performed his daily duties, bathed, dressed in clean garments, washed his lotus feet, and sat on a golden throne.

many gifts.

   Accompanied by many braahmana priests, gopas, gopis, boys, and girls, and bringing many cups, ritual ingredients, and offerings, the village people came to that place.

   veda-vedanga-paragah

   ajagmur - came; munayah - sages; sarve - all; jvalanto - shining; brahma-tejasa - with spiritual splendor; shantah - peaceful; shishya-gaNaih - disciples; sardham - with; veda-vedanga-paragah - traveled to the farther shore of the Vedas and Vedaangas.


   Many great sages shining with spiritual splendor, who had traveled to the farther shore of the Vedas and Vedaangas, came with their disciples.

   brahmanas - braahmaNas; ca - and; kati-vidha - many kinds; bh�kshuka - sannyas�s; vandinas - poets; tatha - so; bhupa - kings; vaishyas - avisyas; ca - and; shudrah - sudras; ca - and; samajagmur - came; mahotsave - to the great festival.


. . . as well as many braahmaNas, sannyaas�s, poets, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shUdras came to that festive ceremony.

   drishtva - seeing; mun�ndran - the kings of sages; nandah - Nanda; ca - and; brahmaNan - braahmaNas; bhumipamh - kings; tatha - so; svarNa-p�that - from his golden throne; samuttasthau - rose; vrajah - the people of Vraja; ca - and; uttasthur - rose; eva - indeed; ca - and.


   Seeing the great sages, braahmaNas, and kings, Nanda rose from his golden throne, and the people of Vraja also rose.

praNamya vasayam asa
   mun�ndra-vipra-bhumipan
tesham anumatim prapya
   tatrovasa punar muda

   praNamya - bowing; vasayam asa - had sit down; mun�ndra-vipra-bhumipan - the great sages, braahmaNas, and kings; tesham - of them; anumatim - consent; prapya - attaining; tatra - there; uvasa - sat; punar - again; muda - happily.


   Nanda bowed before the great sages, braahmaNas, and kings, gave them comfortable sitting places, and, with their permission, happily sat down himself.

pakam ca yashti-nikate
   kartum ajnam cakara ha
paka-prajna-brahmananam
   shatam an�ya sadarat

   pakam - cooking; ca - and; yashti-nikate - under the tent; kartum - to do; ajnam - the order; cakara - gave; ha - inded; paka-prajna-brahmaNanam - of braahmanas expert in cooking; shatam - a hundred; an�ya - bring; sadarat - respectfully.


   Then Nanda respectfully asked a hundred expert braahmaNa cooks to begin cooking under the tent.

   jajvaluh paritah sada
andh�-bhutam ca dhupena
   sthanam tat surabh�-kritam

   tatra - there; ratna-prad�pah - jewel lamps; ca - and; jajvaluh - shone; paritah - everywhere; sada - always; andh�-bhutam - blinded; ca - and; dhupena - with incense; sthanam - place; tat - that; surabh�-kritam - scented.


   In that place jewel lamps shone always and everywhere, a blinding cloud of incense smoke scented every place, . . .

naivedyam ca bahu-vidham
   apurvam su-manoharam

   nana-vidhani - many kinds; pushpani - flowers; malyani - garlands; vividhani - many kinds; ca - and; naivedyam - foods; ca - and; bahu-vidham - many kinds; apurvam - unprecedented; su-manoharam - very beautiful.


. . . there were many flowers and flower garlands, many beautiful and unprecedented offerings of food, . . .

   yava - barley; godhuma - and wheat; curNanam - flour; laDDukair - laDDus; madhurair - sweet; varaih - excellent; ghrita - in ghee; pakvair - cooked; vipra-kritaih - done by braahmaNas; purNani - filled; kalasani - pots; ca - and.


. . . many jars of delicious barley-wheat laDDus the braahmaNas fried in ghee, . . .

   kala-deshodbhavani ca

   vriksha-pakvani - tree-ripened; ramyani - delicious; caru-rambha-phalani - beautiful bananas; ca - and; phalani - fruits; paripakvani - very ripe; kala-deshodbhavani - locally grown and in season; ca - and.

. . . many delicious tree-ripened bananas and other ripe fruits in season, . . .

   ksh�ranam - of milk; kumbha-lakshani - a hundred thousant pots; dadhnam - of yogurt; tavanti - as many; narada - O Naarada; madhunam - of honey; kumbha-shatakam - a hundret post; sarpih-kumbha-sahasrakam - a thousand pots of ghee.


. . . O Naarada, a thousand pots of milk, a thousand pots of yogurt, a hundred pots of honey, a thousand pots of ghee, . . .

svarNa-yantraNi - golden instruments; vadayam asur - played; utsave - in the festival; nana-vidhani - many kinds; patraNi - pots; sauvarNa-rajatani - of gold and silver; ca - and.


   Regal bulls carried the many cooking ingredients. There were many pots of gold and silver. Many musicians melodiously played on golden instruments.

   O braahmaNa, many beautiful and exquisite garments, ornaments, and golden thrones were brought to the tent.

meshakanam ca lakshani
   hy anayam asa tatra vai

   chagalanam - of goats; sahasraNi - a thousand; mahishaNam - of buffaloes; shatani - a hundred; ca - and; meshakanam - of sheep; ca - and; lakshaNi - a hundred thousand; hi - indeed; anayam asa - brought; tatra - there; va - indeed.


   A thousand goats, a hundred buffaloes, and a hundred thousand sheep were also brought.

   ajagmur yashti-sannidhim
prokshitani ca sarvaNi
   rakshitani ca rakshakaih

   shatani - a hundred; eva - and; gaNDakanam - of rhinoceroses; ajagmur - came; yashti-sannidhim - to the tent; prokshitani - sprinkled; ca - and; sarvaNi - all; rakshitani - protected; ca - and; rakshakaih - by guards.


   A hundred rhinoceroses were also brought. The animals were sprinkled with water and protected by guards.

   balakanam - of boys; balikanam - and girls; vrikshanam - of trees; vriksha-yoshitam - of the wives of trees; yunam - of youths; ca - and; yuvat�nam - of young girls; ca - and; sankhyam - the number; kartum - to do; ca - and; kah - who?; kshamah - is able.


   Who is able to count the trees and flowering vines in that place, or the boys, girls, and young men and women that came there?

shrutva drishtva janah sarve
   mumuhuh su-mahotsave

   gayakanam - of the singers; ca - and; sang�tam - the song; nartakanam - of dancers; ca - and; nartanam - the dance; shrutva - hearing; drishtva - seeing; janah - people; sarve - all; mumuhuh - were charmed; su-mahotsave - at the beautiful festival.


   Hearing the singers' singing and seeing the dancers' dancing, everyone became pleased at that beautiful festival.

   candraprabha - Candraprabha; suprabha - Suprabha; ca - and; ratnamala - ratnamala; madalasa - Madalasa; renuka - Renuka; ramaN� - Ramani; brahman - O braahmaNa; eta - they; ajagmur - came; utasave - to the festival.


. . . Candraprabha, Suprabha, Ratnamala, Madalasa, ReNuka, and RamaN� also came to the festival.

   murcham apush ca manavah

   tasam - of them; nrityena - by the dancing; g�tena - singing; stanasya-shroNi-darshanat - by seeing the breasts, hips, and faces; rupeNa - by the beauty; vakra-drishtya - by crooked glances; ca - and; murcham - enchantment; apuh - attained; ca - and; manavah - the men.


   The men at once became enchanted by their singing, dancing, and crooked sidelong glances, and by seeing the beauty of their faces, breasts, and hips.

   ajagama harih svayam
gopala-balakaih sardham
   balena bala-shalina

   etasmin antare - then; sh�ghram - quickly; ajagama - came; harih - Lord Krishna; svayam - personally; gopala-balakaih - with the gopa boys; sardham - with braahmana; balena - powerful; bala-shalina - with His plow.

   Then Lord KrishNa personally came, accompanied by the gopa boys and by powerful Lord Balaraama, who carried His plow.

drishtva tam ca janah sarve
   sambhrama harsha-vihvalah
uttasthur arad bh�tash ca
   pulakancita-vigrahah

   drishtva - seeing; tam - Him; ca - and; janah - the people; sarve - all; sambhrama - respectful; harsha-vihvalah - filled with happiness; uttasthur - stood; arad - near; bh�tah - awed; ca - and; pulakancita-vigrahah - their bodily hairs erect.

   The people, the hairs standing up on their bodies, stood up, happy and filled with awe when they saw Lord KrishNa, . . .

   kr�Da-sthanam - the abode of transcendental pastimes; samayantam - coming; shantam - peaceful; sundara-vigraham - handsome; vinoda - of pastimes; mural�-veNu - murali and venu flutes; shankha - conchshells; shabda - sounds; samanvitam - with.


. . . who had just come from His place of pastimes, who was handsome and peaceful, who was playing a flute and a conchshell, . . .

. . . who was decorated with jewel ornaments and a Kaustbha jewel, whose dark form was anointed with sandal and aguru, . . .

   sharan-madhyahna-padma - a midday autumn lotus; asyam - face; pashyantam - seeing; ratna-darpaNaih - with jewel mirrors; caru - beautiful; candana-candreNa - with a moon of sandal paste; kastur�-binduna - with a musk dot; saha - with; shashankena - with a moon; yatha - as; akasham - the sky; bhala-madhye - in the middle of His forehead; virajitam - shining.


. . . whose face was splendid like a midday autumn lotus flower, who was looking in a jewel mirror, whose forehead was splendid with a sandal-paste moon and a musk dot, who was like a splendid moon in the sky, . . .

   sharad�yam su-nirmalam

   malat�-malaya - with a garland of malati flowers; shyama - dark; kantha - neck; vakshah-sthala - and chest; ujjvalam - splendor; baka-panktya - with a row of ducks; yatha - as; akasham - the sky; sharad�yam - autumn; su-nirmalam - splendid.


. . . whose dark neck and chest, splendid with a garland of maalati flowers, were like an autumn sky splendid with a line of white ducks, . . .

   kunda-prasunair - with kunda flowers; gunjabhir - with gunja; baddha-vankima-cuDakam - crowned; yatha - as; indra-dhanusha - with a rainbow; bhata - shining; vibhantam - shining; bhagaNair - with stars; nabhah - the sky.


. . . whose topknot, tied with gunjaa and kunda flowers, was like a rainbow shining with many stars in the sky, . . .

   dyumaNeh kiraNair yatha

   ratna-kuNDala-d�ptya - with the splendor of jewel earrings; ca - and; smita-vaktram - a crooked smile; su-shobhitam - splendid; sharat-praphulla-padmam - a blossoming autumn lotus; ca - and; dyumaNeh - of the moon; kiraNair - with light; yatha - as.


. . . and whose splendid smile, shining with jewel earrings, was like a autumn lotus blossoming in the moonlight.

vipra-kshatriya-vaishyash ca
   munayo ballava muda
pranamya vasayam asu
   ratna-simhasane vibhum

   vipra-kshatriya-vaishyas - braahmaNa, ksatriyas, and vaisyas; ca - and; munayo - sages; ballava - gopas; muda - happily; praNamya - bowing; vasayam asus - had sit down; ratna-simhasane - on a jewel throne; vibhum - the Lord.


   Then the braahmaNas, kshatriyas, vaishyas, sages, and gopas happily bowed down before the Lord and gave Him a seat on a jewel throne.

uvasa svarNa-p�the sa
   tesham madhye jagat-patih
yatha babhau sharac-candro
   jyotisham antare ca khe

   uvasa - sat; svarNa-p�the - on the golden throne; sa - and; tesham - of them; madhye - in the midst; jagat-patih - the master of the universes; yatha - as; babhau - shone; sharac-candro - an autumn moon; jyotisham - of stars; antare - in; ca - an; khe - the sky.


   Then Lord KrishNa, the master of the universes sat on the golden throne. He was like an autumn moon shining in the midst of many splendid stars.

stutva tam ushus te sarve
   jagatam �shvaram param
svecchamayam gunat�tam
   jyot�-rupam sanatanam

   Seeing the great festival, Lord KrishNa, the most learned scholar of the Niti-shaastras, spoke of the philosophy of right conduct, His words beyond the reach of even the greatest philosophers.

   Some worship brings results in both this life and the next. Some worship does not bring any results in either this life or the next. Worship that is not ordered by the Vedas is a box of sufferings and calamities.

   Does the demigods directly eat the offerings or not? The worship is better when the demigod directly eats.

   The Vedas declare that the braahmaNas are the demigods of the earth. Worship of the braahmaNas is better than all other kinds of worship.

   The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord VishNu, enters the braahmaNas and eats through them. When a braahmaNa is pleased, then all the demigods are pleased also.

   Why would a person engaged in worshiping the braahmanas worship the demigods? When the braahmanas are worshiped then all the demigods are worshiped automatically.

   If a person offers food to a demigod and then does not offer it also to a braahmaNa, then his property becomes burned to ashes and his worship becomes fruitless.

   If one gives in charity to a braahmaNa the foods offered to a demigod, the demigod becomes pleased and offers limitless blessings. The donor goes to the world of the demigods.

   If one offers food to a demigod and then eats the remnants himself, he robs the demigod's property. Such a person goes to hell.

   The remnants of offerings to the demigods may not be eaten. Only the remnants of offerings to Lord VishNu may be eaten. Offerings to Lord VishNu are much better than offerings to the demigods.

   Food not offered to Lord VishNu is stool. Water not offered to Lord VishNu is urine. This is true for everyone, but it is especially true for the braahmaNas.

   Better than chanting mantras, performing austerities, worship, and yajnas, giving charity, and celebrating great festivals, is pleasing the braahmaNas and giving gifts to
them. Pleasing the braahmaNas is the best of all pious deeds.

   The waters of all holy places stay in water that has washed the braahmaNas' feet. By touching that water one attains the result of bathing in all holy places.

   O gopa, by devotedly drinking that water one becomes cured of disease and freed from the sins of seven births. Of this there is no doubt.

   sarva-papat pramucyate

   papam - sin; panca-vidham - five kinds; kritva - doing; yo - who; vipram - a braahmana; pranamed - offers obeisances; dvijam - a braahmaNa; sa - he; snatah - bathed; sarva-t�rtheshu - in all holy places; sarva-papat - from all sins; pramucyate - is freed.


   If he bows down before a braahmaNa, a sinner who has committed the five kinds of sins becomes free of all sins. He attains the result of bathing at all holy places.

darshanan mucyate papad

   brahmaNa-sparsha-matreNa - simply by touching a braahmaNa; mukto - liberated; bhavati - becomes; patak� - a resident of hell; darshanan - from seeing; mucyate - is freed; papad - from sin; iti - thus; vede - in the Vedas; nirupitam - is described.


   Simply by touching a braahmaNa, a resident of hell becomes released. Simply by seeing a braahmana, one becomes free from sins. This is said in the Vedas.

   Intelligent or not, a braahmaNa is the form of Lord Vishnu. The braahmanas that serve Lord Vishnu are more dear than life to Him.

   dvijanam - of the braahmanas; hari-bhaktanam - devoteews of Lord Vishnu; prabhavo - the power; durlabhah - rare; shrutau - in the ear; yesham - of whom; padabja-rajasa - by the dust of the lotus feet; sadyah - at once; puta - purified; vasundhara - the earth.


   The Vedas declare that braahmaNa devotees of Lord VishNu are extremely powerful. The dust of their lotus feet at once purifies the earth.

   t�rtha-papam praNashyati

   tesham - of them; ca - and; pada-cihnam - the footprint; yat - what; t�rtham - a holy place; tat - that; parik�rtitam - said; tesham - of them; ca - and; sparsha-matreNa - simply by the touch; t�rtha-papam - the sins in the holy places; pranashyati - are destroyed.


   Their footprints are holy places. Their touch destroys the sins that sinners leave behind at the holy places.

   By embracing them, conversing with them, eating the remnants of their food, seeing them, or touching them, one becomes freed from all sins.

   Simply by seeing a braahmaNa-servant of Lord Hari one attains the same purification attained by traveling to all holy places and bathing in all holy rivers.

   When a person foolishly eats what is not offered to Lord Hari, his food is like stool and the water he drinks is like urine.

   O gopa, what is in a devotee's hand is automatically the property of Lord VishNu. If someone accepts food from a devotee's hand and then eats it without it being offered to Lord Hari, he is thief of the Supreme Lord's property.

If he is a devotee of Lord Hari, a shUdra should cook food, offer it to Lord Hari, and then eat the remnants.

   Only braahmaNa, kshatriyas, and vaishyas are qualified to worship the Shaalagraama-shilaa. The shUdras are not qualified to worship Lord Hari in that way.

   A person that wears tilaka of mud that touched a cow's hoof attains the result of bathing in a holy place. He is fearless at every step.

   A place where cows stay is holy. One who dies there is at once liberated.

   brahmaNanam - of the braahmaNas; gavam - of cows; angam - the body; yo - one who; hanti - harms; manavadhamah - the lowest of men; brahma-hatya - killing a braahmaNa; samam - equal; papam - sin; bhavet - is; tasya - of him; na - not; samshayah - doubt.


   One who harms a braahmaNa or a cow is the lowest of men. he commits a great sin, as if he had killed a braahmana. Of this there is no doubt.

   yavac candra-divakarau

   narayaNamshan - the limbs of Lord NaaraayaNa; vipramh - the braahmaNas; ca - and; gah - the cows; ca - and; ye - who; ghnanti - harms; manavah - people; kalasutram - to hell; ca - and; te - they; yanti - go; yavac - as; candra-divakarau - the sun and the moon.


   A person who harms the cows or the braahmaNas, who are the limbs of Lord Naaraayana, goes to hell for as long as the sun and moon shine in the sky.

   Lord KrishNa said: Ah! What strange words have We heard from you! Both the scriptures and the common-sense of this world laugh at these words. The demigods condemn these words.

   No one talks like that. Who talks like that? The scriptures don't say that. Only today and only from your mouth has anyone heard words like that.

   O father, please don't talk this nonsense. Say what the Vedic scholars say. The saintly devotees know what the Saama Veda says about this.

   The sun absorbs water and in time releases it. The sun, the clouds, and everything else are under the control of destiny. That is the right explanation.

   The water-laden clouds, ocean, wind, elephants, farmers, kings, and royal counselors are all under the control of destiny. That is the right explanation.

   The elephant takes the water it wishes from the ocean and gives it to the clouds. The clouds are then carried by the wind.

   In place after place and in time after time, rain is manifest on the earth by the will of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Nothing stops His will.

   In one of Brahmaa's days and nights 28 Indras live out their lives and die, one after another. Brahmaa lives for 108 years of such days and nights. Still, Brahmaa's entire life is hardly an eyeblink for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is beyond the modes of material nature. This is a grotesque joke: to worship Indra instead of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

   Nanda was very happy. The hairs of his body stood up. His eyes were filled with tears. A father is pleased to be defeated by his powerful son.

   DiNDi, who was Kamsa's chief minister and the best of poets, recited eight auspicious verses.

   Approaching the hill, Lord Krishna manifested a splendid gigantic form and proclaimed, I am the hill. I shall eat these offerings. You may ask for a boon."

   The gopa Nanda asked for the boon of devotional service to Lord Hari. The gigantic form granted the boon, ate the offerings, and then disappeared.

   Then Nanda, the king of the gopas, fed the braahmaNas and sages and gave charity to the braahmaNas, sages, and poets.

Penetrating the light to its source, he saw a very handsome and splendid person, dark and glorious like a monsoon cloud, wearing glittering, jewel, shark-shaped earrings, wearing a splendid crown of the kings of jewels, His neck and chest splendid with the splendid king of kaustubha jewels, and His limbs decorated with jewel bracelets, armlets, and anklets. Indra
saw this person inside his heart and he also saw the same person outside, standing before him. Then Indra offered prayers to Him, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead.

   When Brahmaa performed great austerities, Lord KrishNa gave to him this prayer, the eleven-syllable mantra, and the all-glorious kavaca.

   In ancient times Brahmaa gave this prayer to Kumaara at Pushkara-tirtha. Kumaara gave to Angiraa Muni. Angiraa Muni gave it to Indra's guru.

   idam - this; indra-kritam - done by Indra; stotram - prayer; nityam - regularly; bhaktya - with devotion; ca - and; yah - one who; pathet - recites; iha - here; prapya - attaining; driDham - firm; bhaktim - devotion; ante - at the end; dasyam - service; labhed - attains; dhruvam - indeed.


   A person who regularly recites this prayer spoken by Indra attains firm devotion in this life, and at the end of this life he attains direct service to Lord KrishNa.

na hi pashyati svapnena
   yama-dutam yamalayam

   janma-mrityu-jara-vyadhi-shokebhyo - from birth, death, old-age, disease, and lamentation; mucyate - is released; narah - a person; na - not; hi - indeed; pashyati - sees; svapnena - in dream; yama-dutam - the messengers of Yamaraaja; yamalayam - the abode of Yamaraaja.


   He is freed from birth, death, old-age, disease, and lamentation. Even in dreams he does not see Yamaraaja's messengers or Yamaraaja's abode.

   shr�-narayana uvaca - Shri Naaraayana Rishi said; indrasya - of Indra; vacanam - teh words; shrutva - hearing; prasannah - pleased; shr�- niketanah - the home of the goddess of fortune; pr�tya - with affection and happiness; tasmai - to him; varam - boon; dattva - giving; sthapayam asa - put down; parvatam - the hill.


   Shri NaaraayaNa Rishi said: hearing Indra's words, Lord KrishNa became pleased. Happily and affectionately, He offered Indra a boon. He put Govardhana Hill back in its place.

   praNamya - bowing; shr�-harim - to Lord KrishNa; shakrah - Indra; prayayau - went; sva-gaNaih - his associates; saha - with; gahvara-sthas - under the hill; janah - the people; sarve - all; prajagmur - went; gahvarad - from the hill; griham - home.


   Bowing to Lord KrishNa, Indra departed with his associates. All the people that had stayed under the hill returned to their homes.

   Everyone thought that KrishNa must be the original Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then Lord KrishNa returned to His own home.

   tushtava - prayed; nandah - Nanda; putram - son; tam - to Him; purNa-brahma - the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sanatanam - eternal; pulakancita-sarvango - the hairs of his bpdy erect; bhakti-purNashru-locanah - his eyes filled with tears of devotion.


   Then, the hairs of his body erect and his eyes filled with tears of devotion, Nanda offered prayers to his son, the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead.

   Being a Brahmaa, being a demigod, or attaining the four kinds of liberation beginning with saalokya, are not equal to even one sixteenth the value of service to Your lotus feet.

   How can the wise think being an Indra, a demigod, or a king, or residing in Svargaloka or Siddhaloka, or living for a long time are very important attainments?

   O Lord, the post of Brahmaa and the other benefits I have just described are not equal to even half a moment's association with Your devotee. How can they be equal to that?

   Your devotee is like You. Who can understand Your devotee? By speaking for half a moment a devotee can give the greatest benefit.

   Association with Your devotee plants the imperishable seedling of devotional service to You. The raincloud of Your devotee's words waters that seedling and makes it grow.

   The burning sun of a non-devotee's words makes that plant wither and dry. The water of remembering Your transcendental qualities brings it back to life.

   tatah - then; samprapya - attaining; brahmatvam - fulness; bhaktasya - of the devotee; j�vanavadhi - in his life; dadati - gives; eva - indeed; phalam - the fruit; tasmai - to him; hari-dasyam - service to Lord KrishNa; anuttamam - incomparable.


   Growing during the devotee's life, the plant finally bears its peerless fruit: direct service to Lord Hari.

samprapya durlabham dasyam
   yadi daso babhuva ha
su-nisprihena tenaiva
   jitam sarvam bhayadikam

   samprapya - attaining; durlabham - rare; dasyam - service; yadi - if; daso - servant; babhuva - became; ha - indeed; su-nispriheNa - without desire; tena - by him; eva - indeed; jitam - conquered; sarvam - all; bhayadikam - beginning with fear.


   If one attains that rare direct service and becomes Your servant, he becomes free of all material desires. He conquers fear and a host of troubles.


Text 225


ity evam uktva bhaktya ca
   nandas tasthau hareh purah
prasanna-vadanah krishno
   dadau tasmai tad-�psitam

   ity evam - thus; uktva - speaking; bhaktya - with devotion; ca - and; nandas - Nanda; tasthau - stood; hareh - of Lord KrishNa; purah - in the presence; prasanna - happy; vadanah-face; krishNo - KrishNa; dadau - gave; tasmai - to him; tad-�psitam - what he desired.


   After speaking these words with great devotion, Nanda stood before Lord KrishNa. Lord KrishNa smiled and fulfilled Nanda's desire.

evam nanda-kritam stotram
   nityam bhaktya ca yah pathet
su-driDham bhaktim apnoti
   sadyo dasyam labhed dhareh

   evam - thus; nanda-kritam - done by Nanda; stotram - prayer; nityam - regularly; bhaktya - with devotion; ca - and; yah - one who; pathet - recites; su-driDham - firm; bhaktim - devotion; apnoti - attains; sadyo - at once; dasyam - service; labhed - attains; hareh - of Lord KrishNa.


   A person who with devotion regularly recites these prayer of Nanda attains very firm devotion to Lord KrishNa. He quickly attains direct service to Lord KrishNa.

tapas taptam yada droNas
   t�rthe ca dharaya saha
stotram tasmai pura dattam
   brahmana tat su-durlabham

hareh shaD-aksharo mantrah
   kavacam sarva-lakshanam
iha saubharina dattam

tad eva kavacam stotram
   sa ca mantrah su-durlabhah
brahmano 'mshena munina
   nandaya ca tapasyate

   tapas - austerities; taptam - performed; yada - when; dronas - Drona; t�rthe - at the holy place; ca - and; dharaya - with Dharaa; saha - with; stotram - to praise; tasmai - to him; pura - before; dattam - given; brahmana - by Brahmaa; tat - that; su-durlabham - rare; hareh - of Lord KrishNa; shaD-aksharo - six syylable; mantrah - mantra; kavacam - kavaca; sarva-lakshaNam - all-glorious; iha - here; saubhariNa - by Saubhari; dattam - given; tasmai - to him; tushtena - pleased; pushkare - at Pushkara- tirtha; tad - that; eva - indeed; kavacam - kavaca; stotram - prayer; sa - that; ca - and; mantrah - mantra; su-durlabhah - very rare; brahmaNo - of Brahmaa; amshena - by the partial expansion; munina - by the sage; nandaya - to Nanda; ca - and; tapasyate - performing austerities.


   When, accompanied by Dharaa, DroNa performed austerities at a holy place, Brahmaa gave him this difficult to attain prayer, the six-syllable KrishNa-mantra, and the glorious Krishna-kavaca. On this earth Saubhari Muni, who is a partial expansion of Brahmaa, again gave the same prayer, mantra, and kavaca to Nanda, who was
performing austerities.


Text 230


mantram stotram ca kavacam
   ishta-devo gurus tatha
ya yasya vidya prac�na
   na tam tyajati nishcitam

   mantram - mantra; stotram - prayer; ca - and; kavacam - kavaca; ishta-devo - worshipable Deity; gurus - guru; tatha - so; ya - which; yasya - of whom; vidya - knowledge; prac�na - ancient; na - not; tam - that; tyajati - abandons; nishcitam - indeed.


   One who attains this prayer, mantra, and kavaca, a bona-fide guru, and Lord KrishNa as his worshipable Deity, attains spiritual knowledge that is never lost.

ity evam kathitam stotram
   shr�-krishNakhyanam adbhutam
sukhadam mokshadam saram
   bhava-bandhana-mocanam

   iti - thus; evam - in this way; kathitam - spoken; stotram - prayer; shr�-krishNakhyanam - glorifying Lord KrishNa; adbhutam - wonderful; sukhadam - giving happiness; mokshadam - giving liberation; saram - the best; bhava-bandhana-mocanam - release from the bonds of repeated birth and death.


   Thus I have spoken to you this wonderful transcendental prayer glorifying Lord KrishNa, a prayer that brings both happiness and liberation from the bonds of repeated birth and death.
