Re: Ramayan 3392 A.D.
Dear Vaisnavas,
Nityananda Gauranga Hare Krishna! Please accept my respectful obeisances!
Movie making in my opinion is never going to have the same effect as reading from the scriptures and certainly all the attempts made by movie makers in this country and abroad have not been very successful in reaching the spiritual core of the devotional movement. Movies made on devotees of the Lord are often excellent at stimulating some saintly influence in the people involved as well as the viewers. But that influence is very quickly often forgotten and there are very few movies on devotees that have really made a spiritual impact. Most of these movies I have seen are inaccurate on facts and sometimes even distort the siddhanta.
Some years back there had been a movie that was a very stupid interpretation of Vedic teaching which actually had nothing to do with scriptures and only broadcasted nonsense things like consciousness being produced in dead matter and machines, in my opinion it was highly offensive Mayavada nonsense. Now-a-days some movie makers are putting Vedic verses to all kinds of unmelodious and materialistic noises in the name of music which are completely tamasic and completely take away the listeners from the spiritual mood.
A note : The videos made on our website and on other devotional sites are not movies in my opinion as they are actual videos made live involving real devotees and other things related to the Lord. But the movies which we see made by the film makers are simply imitations.
Regarding movies made on the Lord's pastimes, I have seen many movies like this, but none of them possess any of the spiritual potency that is found in the spiritual literature and neither can they give any proper description of the Lord's spiritual pastimes. Srila Prabhupada had dismissed a film producer's proposal saying, "Who will understand your film making?"
If movies can be used to make devotees out of people, I have no objection to it. But based on my previous experiences, I see that they often fall flat when it comes to possessing the required spiritual potency and till now I have not seen any success in this department that is even comparable to the huge success made by distributing literature and devotional videos.
For this reason, I feel that watching a real bhakti yoga video to an imitation attempt is definitely better spiritually.
Narrating my experience,
Srinath
