Jaya Gaura Sankirtana!

Dear Swamiji and all Vaisnavas,

Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! My humble pranams! This is from Sri Murari Gupta's Chaitanya Charita.

       tatash ca prema-gosvami / sammantrya sva-janaih saha
navina gaura-candrasya / nama-sankirttana shubham 16

karoti mandali-ktya / harena vainavaih saha
ntyati paramoddanda / garjjati dhavati kvacit 17

tatah - then; ca - and; prema-gosvami - Advaita _carya; sammantrya - inviting; sva-janaih saha - with His own men; navinam - novel; gaura-candrasya - of Gaura Candra; nama-sankirtanam; shubham - auspicious; karoti - He made; mandali-ktya - forming a circle; harena - with jubilation; vainavaih saha - together with the vaishnavas; ntyati - He dances; parama-uddandam - very intense; garjjati - He roars; dhavati - He runs; kvacit - sometimes.

Then Shri Advaita _carya, the gosvami of prema assembled His own men and created a new form of sankirtana from the names of Gaura Candra. He jubilantly formed a circle of all the vaishnavas, and within it He danced very high, sometimes roaring and sometimes running.

nityanando 'pi bhagavan / gauranga-bhava-bhavitah
yasya ntya-padaghataih / kampate bhuvana-trayam 18

nityanandah - eternally blissful Lord; api - although; bhagavan - the all-opulent Lord; gauranga-bhava-bhavitah - felt according to the mood of Gauranga; yasya - whose; ntya - dancing; pada-aghataih - by the striking of His feet; kampate - trembled; bhuvana-trayam - the three worlds.

On that occasion, Shri Nityananda made the three worlds quake by the striking of His dancing feet. Although He is Himself the Supreme Lord, still every emotion that He feels is in harmony with Gauranga's desire.

mat-prana-sarvvasva gaura-candra mam uddhara prabho
nityananda-priya gaura / gadadhara-rasa-prada 19

  mat-prana-sarvasva - O all-in-all of my life-force; gaura-candra - O Gaura Candra; mam - me; uddhara - deliver; prabho - O Prabhu; nityananda-priya - O dear one of Nityananda; gaura - O golden Lord; gadadhara-rasa-prada - O bestower of rasa to Gadadhara.

The devotees chanted, "O Gaura Candra! O all-in-all of My life force! Kindly deliver me, Prabhu. O beloved of Nityananda! O Golden Lord! O bestower of rasa on Gadadhara!

shrivasadi-priya-prana / prema-da karunarnava
eva sankirttana so 'pi / gaurangah kirtana-priyah 20

kna-sankirttana matva / jagau prema-vashah svayam
sa eva kirttananando / brahmanda purayan babhau 21

shrivasa - of Shrivasa; adi - and the other devotees; priya-prana - O life and soul; prema-da - bestower of love for Krishna; karuna-arnava - O ocean of mercy; evam - thus; sankirtanam - congregational chanting; sah - He; api - also; gaurangah - the golden Lord; kirtana-priyah - who loves kirtana; kna-sankirtanam - congregational chanting of Krishna's names; matva - thinking; jagau - He sang; prema-vashah - controlled by love; svayam - Himself; sah - He; eva - indeed; kirtana-anandah - the happiness of kirtana; brahmandam - the universe; purayan - filling; babhau - He shone.

"O life and soul of all the devotees headed by Shrivasa! O bestower of love for Krishna! O ocean of compassion!" Then Shri Gauranga, who dearly loved kirtana, decided to personally perform Krishna-sankirtana. He sang from the depths of His heart, moved by His great love for Krishna. His form shone radiantly with the joy of kirtana, and He filled the entire universe with that joy.

sarvve pashyanti ntyanta / gaura-candra sva-sammukham
yatha madhya-gata kna / balaka vana-bhojinah 22

sarve - all; pashyanti - they see; ntyantam - dancing; gaura-candram - the Golden Moon; sva-sammukham - face to face with Him; yatha - as; madhya-gatam - sitting in the center; knam - the all-attractive; balakah - boys; vana-bhojinah - eaters of the forest picnic.

Each of the devotees beheld Gaura Candra dancing face to face with himself, just as each of the cowherd boys of Vraja saw Shri Krishna seated in the center of the circle during their forest picnic.

ishvaro 'pi bhagavatadvaitacaryyena sayutah
nityanando maha-tejah / premonmadena ntyati 23

ishvarah - the Supreme Lord; api - although; bhagavata - by the Lord; advaita-acaryena - by Advaita _carya; sayutah - together with; nitya-anandah - the original form of a devotee; maha-tejah - very powerful; prema-unmadena - by the madness of love; ntyati - He dances.

Although Nityananda is the Supreme Lord and is inconceivably powerful, still in the company of Advaitacarya, who is also the Lord, He became maddened by love for Krishna and danced.

matta-parindra-vikrantah / karayann avani-talam
gauranga-prema-data yas / tasya ki citram eva tat 24

matta-parindra - intoxicated lion; vikrantah - strong; karayan - causing to do; avani-talam - the earth planet; gauranga-prema - love for Gauranga; data - donor; yah - who; tasya - His; kim - what? citram - astonishing; eva - indeed; tat - that.

Shri Advaita appeared very powerful just like an intoxicated lion, and He inundated the earth with chanting and dancing. He is the magnanimous bestower of Gauranga-prema. What wonderful deed is impossible for Him to perform?

gadadharo 'pi gauranga-priti-do ntyati sukham
shrivasadyah sukha sarvve / ntyanti gaura-cetasah 25

gadadharah - the energy of a devotee; api - also; gauranga - the Golden Lord; priti-dah - giver of pleasure; ntyati - he dances; sukham - happily; shrivasa; adyah - headed by; sukham - happily; sarve - all; ntyanti - they dance; gaura-cetasah - their minds fixed on Gaura.

Gadadhara also danced to his heart's content, bringing delight to Gauranga, and all the bhaktas headed by Shrivasa danced jubilantly with their minds fixed on the form of Gaura.

etad antar-gata yasya / gauranga-guna-kirttanam
sa eva saki nanye ca / kotisho jnana-paragah 26

etat - this; anta-gatam - enter within; yasya - who can; gauranga-guna-kirtanam - the chanting of the qualities of Gauranga; sah - he; eva - indeed; saki - directly understand; na - not; anye - others; ca - and; kotishah - millions; jnana-paragah - fully conversant in transcendental knowledge.

Only one who can enter into the chanting of Gauranga's qualities can actually comprehend them, and not millions of others who may be fully conversant with transcendental knowledge.

Thus ends the Nineteenth Sarga entitled "Shrimad Advaita Prabhu Performs Gauranga Kirtana," in the Fourth Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.

Daaso'smi,
Srinath
