Honesty
We've been discussing obstacles to our chanting in the Japa Room since the beginning, it's one of the main things that we focus on. We cover a lot of other aspects of chanting Japa, but with this aspect we ask everyone to monitor their Japa constantly and we take some time to discuss everyone's obstacles every week.
The thing that keeps repeatedly coming to my attention is how hard it is for some to be honest about these things....we think we have no obstacles or we think we can just "keep them to ourselves and work them out on our own... much better not to reveal our weaknesses and have other devotees know our 'failings'."
It's also been coming to my attention that those who carefully examine their own obstacles and are willing to reveal them in the Japa Room and have them discussed, are also the same people who make the most progress in correcting those obstacles and then having better Japa as a result.
Honesty....it's all about being really honest. First we have to be totally honest with ourselves and really take a good hard look at our Japa practices....then we have to be willing to at least discuss them with one other devotees (revealing your mind in confidence).
Of course it's helpful to everyone if you reveal them in a room full of devotees so that everyone can benefit, or on a website such as this one dealing with Japa only.
Either way, it all comes down to being willing to be honest with yourself and others and then make a change.
