Re: Animal Skin in instuments
Nityaananda! Gauraanga! Hare Krishna! That's right. Strictly, the skin of a dead cow should be used for making a mridanga drum. Killing living cows is expressly and strictly forbidden for this. Thus, it is the duty of those who purchase a mridanga to first find out the source of the skin used in the mridanga and then purchase it if it is skin of a dead cow to save oneself from sin. One can purchase a mridanga made by a genuine devotee who has himself checked and used the skin of a dead cow. Synthetic mridangas known as Balaraama Mridangas do not involve any direct animal products.
