Why Do We Chant?

Recently I was listening to a lecture and I remember a sentence coming from a devotee in a retreat: "Before the retreat my Japa was an impediment to my life, after this retreat my life is an impediment to my Japa".
Wow this a good thing to think about, how important is Japa in my life. Do I chant because I need to? Others tell me it's good because of my spiritual master's order - to satisfy myself or to please the Lord?
What's the importance I give to my chanting? In my opinion, for sure everyone of us could answer this question differently but as I am having the opportunity to share mine, I can say that I have never thought about that before. I may chant sometimes because I need to feel the Lord closer to me....sometimes to please my spiritual master and Srila Prabhupada (when chanting is hard) other times I chant because I know I may become a better person - having developed all good qualities of a devotee and sometimes I may chant cause makes me peaceful.

There are thousands of needs for chanting, mine are for sure still on the bodily platform. I am sure the real purpose of this chanting is to please the Lord and not ourself....is to give Krsna all we have, seek for His association and beg for mercy of serving the saints in order to achieve Krsna prema.
The most important thing in all this meditation is that we already know our aim, even if in the beginning appears covered with dust, we are sure this mirror will be easily cleaned if we follow the footsteps of the vaisnavas.May this chanting complete my days and make me a real humble servant.

Hare Krsna
